Practice Is How Python Actually Sticks 🐍

Reading about Python is easy. Writing it is where most people stall. This book exists for that exact moment: you understand variables, loops, and functions well enough to follow along with a tutorial, but you freeze when it is time to open a file and build something on your own.

Python Programming Exercises, Gently Explained hands you 42 short, purposeful problems designed to close that gap. They are deliberately small — each one solvable in a single sitting — and deliberately gentle. Nothing here is meant to trick you, and nothing assumes you have already survived a competitive-programming site.

Short Exercises, Real Retrieval 🧠

In the foreword, Python trainer Trey Hunner offers the principle the whole book runs on: we do not learn by putting information into our heads, we learn by trying to retrieve it. You can watch Python videos all afternoon and forget nearly all of it by evening. Solving a small problem yourself — even badly, even slowly — is a different kind of memory.

The exercises are ordered roughly from least to most difficult, and they are numbered so you can jump to whichever one catches your interest. Working straight through builds momentum; skipping around is perfectly fine.

How Each Exercise Is Structured

Every entry follows the same practical shape, which makes the book easy to use while you are actually sitting at a keyboard:

  • Exercise Description — what the program should do, plus a list of assert statements that specify the results your solution must produce. This is the only section you need in order to attempt the problem.
  • Prerequisite concepts — the specific Python ideas the exercise draws on, so you know what to review if something feels unfamiliar.
  • Solution Design — a plain-English explanation of the concepts involved and how a solution comes together.
  • Gotchas — the small, annoying surprises that catch people mid-solution.
  • A fill-in-the-blank template — available if you genuinely need it, but the book encourages you to try the exercise first.

What You Should Already Know 💡

This is not a first book on programming. Before starting, you should be comfortable installing the Python interpreter, running code in the interactive shell and in source files, and working with variables and the assignment operator. You will also want a working grasp of data types, math, comparison and Boolean operators, input() and print(), string methods, if/elif/else, for and while loops with break and continue, functions with parameters and return values, and structures such as lists, tuples, and dictionaries. Importing modules like math or random should be second nature.

Classes, object-oriented programming, machine learning, and data science are not required. If those are your destination, the exercises here make a reasonable starting path toward them.

Who Gets the Most From It

This book suits self-taught programmers who have finished a beginner resource and want a structured way to keep progressing. It also works well for students between courses, career changers preparing for junior developer interviews, and anyone who suspects their Python knowledge is more recognition than recall. Once you can solve these exercises comfortably, you are close to the level expected of an entry-level developer.

About the Author

Al Sweigart is the author of Automate the Boring Stuff with Python and several other widely used Python books, all released under a Creative Commons license so readers can access them without cost barriers. His teaching style favors clear comments, practical examples, and code that solves real problems rather than showing off clever syntax. Trey Hunner, who wrote the foreword, runs Python Morsels and trains Python teams professionally.

Open a Blank File and Start ⚙️

The fastest way to find out whether this book is for you is to try one exercise. Pick something near the middle of the table of contents, read the description, and see how far you get before reaching for the hints. The explanations are there when you need them, and the exercises are short enough that finishing one feels like progress rather than a project.
