A Lecture Course That Opens the Nuclear Universe ⚛️

Nuclear Astrophysics: A Course of Lectures grew out of Dr. Md A. Khan’s postgraduate physics lectures at Aliah University, Kolkata. It is written for readers who want to understand how nuclear reactions power stars, create the elements, and drive some of the most violent events in the cosmos. The book assumes no deep prior expertise in astronomy, physics, or mathematics, and it keeps mathematical derivations lean so that the physical ideas remain in focus.

What the Book Explores

Across eleven chapters, the text moves from foundational nuclear and particle physics to the astrophysical settings where those principles matter. Early chapters cover radioactivity, binding energy, nuclear reactions, reaction Q-values, cross-sections, the Coulomb barrier, and reaction rates. From there, the discussion turns to nucleosynthesis, stellar energy sources, and the processes that build elements up to and beyond iron.

  • Stellar burning: the proton-proton chain, CNO cycles, helium burning, the triple-alpha process, and heavier alpha-burning.
  • Neutron capture: the s- and r-neutron processes, including the role of nuclear physics, required conditions, and potential r-process sites.
  • Explosive astrophysics: explosive H, He, C, Ne, O, and Si burning, core-collapse supernovae, novae, X-ray bursts, and neutron-star mergers.
  • Modern approaches: thermonuclear reaction networks, radioactive beams, recoil separators, transfer reactions, and astrophysical S-factors at low energies.
  • Computational perspective: stellar structure and evolution, radiation transfer, and astrophysical fluid dynamics.

Designed for Graduate Study and Independent Reading 📚

The lecture-based structure makes the material suitable for a one-semester course, but it is not limited to the classroom. Each chapter ends with solved problems and exercises, giving students a way to test their understanding. Bibliographic references at the end of each chapter point toward further study, and the author includes recent work on calculating physical parameters of astrophysical importance, such as S-factors at low energies.

Dr. Khan writes for both undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in nuclear astrophysics, as well as for researchers who want a concise overview and amateur readers with a serious curiosity about astronuclear phenomena. The book also includes historical context and discussion alongside the technical material.

Where Nuclear Physics Meets the Cosmos 🔭

Nuclear astrophysics sits at the intersection of two fields: the physics of nuclei and the physics of stars. The reactions described in this book help explain why stars shine, how elements are synthesized, what happens when massive stars collapse, and how binary systems can produce sudden, energetic events. By connecting reaction rates, cross-sections, and stellar environments, the text shows how laboratory nuclear physics becomes a tool for reading the history of the universe.

About the Author

Dr. Md A. Khan is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Aliah University, Kolkata. He received his Ph.D. in 2002 from the University of Calcutta and has more than fifteen years of teaching and research experience. His research interests include sub-barrier fusion in nuclear astrophysics and the structure of atoms and nuclei. He has published and presented nearly two dozen papers in international journals and conferences.

A Clear Starting Point for a Complex Field

For readers who want a structured, lecture-tested route into nuclear astrophysics, this volume offers a patient and accessible introduction. It balances conceptual explanation with the quantitative tools needed for graduate study, making it a useful companion for coursework, research orientation, or independent exploration of how the universe forges its elements.
