Microwave engineering is a field where careful circuit design meets fast-moving applications. This January 2021 issue of IEEE Microwave Magazine brings together technical features on filter design, wireless power transfer, quantum-computing hardware, and millimeter-wave measurement, with society columns and professional updates alongside them.
Three technical features, several different challenges
In “Nonresonating Modes Do It Better!”, Simone Bastioli and Richard V. Snyder explore how additional modes can work alongside operating modes in microwave filter design. The article considers filter architectures including waveguide, coaxial-line, dielectric, and cavity-resonator designs.
Naoki Shinohara’s feature on wireless power transfer surveys technology for energy harvesting, millimeter-wave and terahertz rectennas, MIMO-WPT, and near-field applications. A third feature turns to cryogenic CMOS circuits and systems for quantum processors, including microwave excitation and readout configurations.
Measurement at the millimeter-wave scale
The issue also includes the 2020 Radio & Wireless Week student-paper competition winner: a study of phase perturbation as a measurement metric in a noncontact, in-line production system. It focuses on tracking very small phase changes using an all-electronic millimeter-wave system.
Beyond the feature articles
Regular departments widen the view to include microwave business, engineering commentary, education, women in microwaves, society news, and more. The issue also includes conference-related material and a conference calendar, making it a blend of technical reading and professional community updates.
For microwave and RF professionals
Researchers, practicing engineers, educators, and students with an interest in microwave theory and techniques will find a varied set of perspectives here—from practical design questions to emerging applications and the work of the MTT-S community.
