Real-Time Data Meets the Digital Pipeline
Long-distance oil and gas pipelines have grown into large, networked systems, and managing them well now depends on more than traditional construction and operations methods. This SpringerBrief explores how real-time data, GIS, SCADA, and virtual reality can work together to create a more connected digital pipeline. Written by Zhenpei Li and Lehao Yang, the book is the second volume in the Digital Oil & Gas Pipeline: Research and Practice series and was published in 2021 as part of SpringerBriefs in Geography.
Rather than treating each technology in isolation, the text follows the logic of an integrated pipeline-management environment: field data must be acquired, moved, interpreted, visualized, and used for monitoring and decision support.
What the Book Examines
- Pipeline real-time data — its meaning, operational significance, and role in management-control integration.
- Pipeline SCADA and OPC — architecture, functions, technical principles, OPC data access specifications, objects, interfaces, and data-access methods.
- SCADA–GIS integration — an OPC-based approach for bringing real-time SCADA data into pipeline GIS and the Pipeline Spatial Data Model (PSDM).
- Historical data access — using ODBC to retrieve SCADA historical data for online or offline analysis and simulation.
- Networked virtual reality — 3D terrain modeling, texture mapping, large-scene roaming, virtual facility modeling, and 3D visual monitoring.
SCADA, OPC, and the GIS Connection 💻
A central contribution of the book is its proposed method for integrating pipeline SCADA with GIS through OPC. The authors describe a data access component that uses OPC interfaces to retrieve real-time data from the SCADA system and transfer it to the Pipeline Spatial Data Model. In this setup, GIS can receive live pipeline information and also send instructions back to SCADA through the same component. Historical SCADA records are accessed through ODBC, allowing GIS-based monitoring to combine current and past operating conditions. The result is a framework for spatial analysis, simulation, and decision support that draws on both real-time and historical pipeline data.
Building a Networked Virtual Pipeline 🛢️
The later sections turn to the pipeline network virtual reality system. The aim is a network-based, interactive 3D dynamic virtual pipeline that supports 3D visualization and virtual reality representation of pipeline facilities and terrain. Topics include large-scene roaming, terrain modeling and texture mapping, performance and speed improvements for browsing large 3D terrain in a network environment, and interaction between virtual scenes and external programs. The book also discusses how the virtual reality system can interact with the pipeline SCADA system for 3D visual monitoring, and how it can connect with pipeline WebGIS at both the data and user-interface levels.
Who May Find It Useful
This is a focused research brief for readers with a technical or professional interest in pipeline engineering, oil and gas storage and transportation, pipeline automation, geographic information systems, WebGIS, SCADA systems, and virtual reality. Researchers, graduate students, and practitioners working on digital pipeline construction or pipeline operation management will find the material relevant, especially those exploring how real-time data and 3D visualization can be integrated into a single monitoring and analysis environment.
Part of a Larger Research Series
Pipeline Real-time Data Integration and Pipeline Network Virtual Reality System sits within the broader Digital Oil & Gas Pipeline: Research and Practice series. The series presents the authors’ research and practice on digital pipeline construction, covering WebGIS, GIS web services, pipeline SCADA, OPC, X3D, and network virtual reality. This second book concentrates on real-time data integration and the virtual reality representation of pipeline networks.
