Be Expert with Map and Compass: The Complete Orienteering Handbook

Practical navigation, the old-school way 📍

Be Expert with Map and Compass: The Complete Orienteering Handbook is a seasoned guide to one of the most dependable skills in the outdoors: knowing how to read a map, trust a compass, and move with confidence when GPS is unavailable or simply not the best tool for the job. This fourth edition keeps the book’s classic spirit while bringing the material into the present with updated references, photos, and modern context.

The structure is easy to appreciate from the table of contents alone: it begins with everyday uses of maps and compasses, then moves through map reading, compass basics, solo travel by map or compass, and finally into orienteering as both a recreational pursuit and a competitive sport. By the end, the book also turns to event organization, course preparation, and practical tests that help readers check what they’ve learned.
