The CEO Whisperer: Meditations on Leadership, Life, and Change

A Psychoanalyst’s View of Leadership

Manfred Kets de Vries brings an unusual and powerful lens to the study of leadership. Trained as an economist and later as a psychoanalyst, he has spent his career exploring why organizational life is so often driven by unseen emotional forces. In this book, he shares reflections that go far beyond conventional management advice, inviting readers to consider how their inner world shapes the way they lead, decide, and relate to others.

Real Stories, Deeper Patterns

The book opens with a haunting email from an executive whose professional and personal life is unraveling. Kets de Vries uses this real-world case—anonymized and carefully examined—to illustrate the complex interplay between family dysfunction, personality disorders, and workplace struggles. Throughout the meditations, he draws on similar stories and clinical insights to unpack themes like narcissism, psychopathy, victim mentality, and the difficulty of authentic communication.

What Readers Can Expect

• Thoughtful essays that connect psychoanalytic ideas to everyday leadership challenges
• Explorations of how past experiences shape present behavior
• Guidance on tolerating uncertainty and avoiding simplistic labels
• Reflections on the emotional labor of executive life

For Executives, Coaches, and the Curious

This is not a book of step-by-step formulas. Instead, it offers something rarer: a way of thinking more deeply about the human side of work. Executives, coaches, consultants, and students of organizational behavior will find material that provokes reflection and encourages a more psychologically informed approach to leadership.

Kets de Vries writes with honesty, wit, and a seasoned clinician’s respect for complexity. The result is a book that can be read straight through or returned to as a source of ongoing insight.
