Linux & Open Source Annual 2025, Volume 10

Linux is no longer a niche operating-system choice—and this annual shows just how much there is to explore. Linux & Open Source Annual 2025, Volume 10 ranges from choosing a distribution to putting open-source tools to work across security, communication, creativity and entertainment.

Compiled by Aiden Dalby and Steve Dacombe, the collection brings together practical Linux coverage and a broad look at free and open-source software. It is a lively browse for newcomers mapping out their options and longtime users looking for new ideas.

Find a Linux distribution that fits

The distro section considers next-generation and beginner-friendly distributions, lightweight and rescue systems, hacker-focused options, BSD, and Pop!_OS. Rather than treating Linux as a single desktop experience, the coverage opens up the variety of systems and approaches available.

Security, systems and performance

Other features turn to Linux security, ransomware, virtualization, malware and benchmarking. Together, these topics connect everyday system use with the questions of protection, testing and infrastructure that matter to people who manage or explore their own computing environments.

Put open source to everyday use

The annual also follows Linux into audio and music, embedded systems, office work, email and social networking. Its later sections branch into games, video, vector graphics, photography and a toolkit—showing the range of practical and creative tasks that open-source software can support.

A broad tour for curious Linux users

With its mix of distribution advice, system topics and application coverage, this volume suits readers who want to discover what Linux can do beyond the familiar desktop. Browse for a specific interest, or follow the contents across the many corners of the open-source world. 💻
