John Singer Sargent’s Alpine Sketchbooks: A Young Artist’s Perspective

John Singer Sargent’s Alpine Sketchbooks presents two sketchbooks filled by the artist in 1870, when he was fourteen. This digital edition reproduces the 1991 Metropolitan Museum of Art publication by Stephen D. Rubin. It is available for instant download as a PDF.

The book connects Sargent’s early Swiss travels with his later mastery of watercolor. It offers a close look at a decisive moment in his development.

Book Overview

In the summer of 1870, John Singer Sargent traveled through Switzerland with his parents and two sisters. He filled the larger sketchbook, inscribed Splendid Mountain Watercolours, and the smaller Album No. 3, with watercolor, graphite, and black crayon drawings. Stephen D. Rubin, a research associate at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, studied the two albums and reconstructed the original order of their pages. The project also used unpublished letters written by Sargent’s father, Dr. FitzWilliam Sargent, to trace the family’s Alpine itinerary.

What You’ll Discover Inside

  • Reproductions of Sargent’s 1870 Alpine sketchbook pages in watercolor, graphite, and black crayon.
  • A reconstruction of the original order of the Splendid Mountain Watercolours sketchbook.
  • Views of Alpine sites in the Bernese Oberland and Pennine Alps, many identified by Sargent’s own inscriptions.
  • Quotations from Dr. FitzWilliam Sargent’s letters that document the family’s summer journey through Switzerland.
  • A record of the 1991–1992 exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Why This Book Matters

These sketchbooks show Sargent’s precocious talent before he became a celebrated portraitist. They also preserve his direct responses to the Swiss landscape in 1870. The publication is a valuable resource for art historians and for readers interested in American expatriate life and travel drawing.
