Computing Essentials 2023: Making IT Work for You

Computing touches nearly every part of modern life, from the phone in your pocket to the systems that manage information behind the scenes. Computing Essentials 2023: Making IT Work for You offers an introductory, wide-angle view of those technologies—and of the choices, risks, and responsibilities that come with using them.

Across 13 chapters, the book builds from basic information technology concepts into the internet, software, computer components, networks, security, databases, systems design, and programming. Its broad coverage helps readers see how the pieces fit together rather than treating each device or topic as an isolated subject.

From Everyday Devices to the Systems Behind Them

The early chapters introduce information systems, the web, electronic commerce, application software, and operating systems. Later chapters explain hardware, input and output, storage, communications, and networks—core concepts that clarify what computers do and how their components work together.

Technology, People, and Responsibility

Computing is more than equipment and software. Dedicated coverage of privacy, security, and ethics brings the human consequences of technology into focus, alongside chapters on information systems, databases, systems analysis and design, and programming languages.

A Study-Friendly Introduction

Chapter features such as visual summaries, key terms, and review questions give readers ways to revisit important ideas and check their understanding. Practical recurring features connect the subject to everyday technology use and the broader effects of IT.

Who May Find It Useful

This introductory text is suited to students beginning a study of computing and to general readers who want a structured grounding in computer literacy. It offers a clear route through the fundamentals—from using the internet and understanding software to considering security, ethics, and the design of information systems.
