From Copied One-Liners to Scripts You Can Maintain

Chris Dent has been using PowerShell since 2007 and is a familiar voice in the Virtual PowerShell User Group, where he spends a good deal of time answering other people’s questions. Mastering PowerShell Scripting, Fifth Edition (Packt, May 2024) reads like the accumulated answer to those questions: a patient explanation of how the language actually behaves, and why commands that look like magic often fail to survive contact with a real environment.

The subtitle states the brief without decoration — automate repetitive tasks and simplify complex administrative tasks using PowerShell. The method here is to build understanding of the machinery first, then let the automation follow from it.

Learn the Machinery Before You Automate It

The opening chapter sets the tone. Before anything is scripted, the book works through updatable help: Get-Help and its syntax, examples, parameter and full views, plus Save-Help, Update-Help and the about_* files. Command naming comes next, with the verb-noun convention, aliases, and practical techniques for finding the command you actually need.

Parameters get the attention they deserve: optional and positional parameters, mandatory parameters, switch parameters, parameter sets, and the common parameters that appear on nearly every command. Confirm and WhatIf, ConfirmPreference and WhatIfPreference, the Force and PassThru switches, drives and providers — each is explained in context. Splatting earns its own discussion, both as a way to avoid unwieldy lines and as a way to stop repeating yourself when the same parameters recur.

Modules, Repositories, and Code From Elsewhere 📦

Modules are where PowerShell work becomes reusable. Get-Module, Import-Module and Remove-Module are covered alongside PSModulePath, module content, and the practical question of running Windows PowerShell modules inside PowerShell 7. The chapter then moves outward to the PowerShell Gallery and the working commands around it — Find-Module, Install-Module, Update-Module and Save-Module — before turning to, repositories generally, version ranges, and setting up both SMB and NuGet repositories.

Variables, Objects, and the Pipeline 🧠

Variables, arrays and hashtables are treated as data structures rather than syntax. Naming and creating variables, provider variables, value versus reference types, type conversion, and the scope modifiers and numeric scopes that explain so many surprising results. Arrays are built, extended, indexed and reshaped, with List and ArrayList, multi-dimensional and jagged arrays all appearing. Hashtables are created, edited, enumerated, and used as filters.

Objects are the heart of PowerShell, and the pipeline chapters show why. Standard and non-standard output, Get-Member, properties, methods, return and argument types, and the creation and modification of objects through PSCustomObject, New-Object and Add-Member. Then come the commands that shape a pipeline: ForEach-Object with its Begin, End, Parallel and MemberName parameters; Where-Object; Select-Object with calculated properties, ExpandProperty and Unique; Sort-Object; Group-Object; and Measure-Object. Import and export round things out through Export-Csv, Import-Csv, Export-Clixml, Import-Clixml and Tee-Object, with Format-Table and Format-List shown for what they are — display tools, not data tools.

Operators, From Comparison to Bit Shifting

Operator precedence, grouping and sub-expressions come first, followed by unary, binary and ternary forms. Arithmetic operators, increment and decrement, the comparison family (-eq and -ne, -like and -notlike, greater and less than, case sensitivity, comparisons against null, -contains and -in), and the regular expression operators -match, -notmatch, -replace and -split. Logical operators — -and, -or, -not and -xor — lead into the bitwise set (-band, -bor, -bxor, -bnot) and the shift operators -shl and -shr. Assignment operators, including the compound forms, and the type-testing operators -as, -is and -isnot close the section.

What the Fifth Edition Brings

The book is a long-running project. The first edition appeared in April 2015, and this fifth edition carries a 2024 copyright and a May 2024 publication date, which puts four substantial revisions between the original and the version you are reading. That history matters if you have used an older edition: the material has been reworked around current practice rather than simply reprinted, and the fifth edition is written for a PowerShell 7-era workflow — the modules chapter, for example, deals directly with running Windows PowerShell modules under PowerShell 7, and the pipeline chapter covers the Parallel parameter on ForEach-Object.

Who Will Get the Most From This Book

  • Administrators who write PowerShell often enough to be frustrated by half-understood behaviour and want the underlying model explained properly.
  • Developers and DevOps engineers who need to automate build, deployment or platform tasks from the command line.
  • Intermediate scripters moving from single commands toward functions, modules and scripts that other people can read and maintain.
  • Readers of earlier editions who want the material brought up to date.

It is a working reference as much as a front-to-back read. The chapter and section structure is granular enough that a specific problem — a scope that will not behave, a parameter set that refuses to bind, a hashtable used as a filter — can be looked up directly.
