Kotlin for Android Developers

Learn Kotlin in the context of building an Android app. Antonio Leiva takes a project-based route through the language, introducing concepts as they become useful in the work of creating an application rather than presenting Kotlin as a stand-alone reference.

That practical structure makes the book especially relevant to Android developers who want to see how Kotlin features fit into everyday app code—and who are ready to follow examples at a computer.

The chapters move from setting up an Android Studio project into classes, functions, properties, layouts, and app components. As the example develops, the book introduces Kotlin ideas in context, including extension functions, data classes, collections, null safety, and flow control.

Connect Kotlin concepts to Android work

Rather than stopping at syntax, the material explores tasks such as retrieving data from an API, converting JSON into data classes, displaying information in the interface, and saving or requesting data from a database. Other chapters address application structure, settings, testing, and communication with Java code.

A practical route for Android developers

This is a useful fit for readers who prefer learning through a running example and hands-on coding. It can also serve as a guided introduction for developers moving from Java toward Kotlin in Android projects. The book describes itself as a learning tool, not a complete language reference.

This edition was last updated on February 11, 2019. Its coverage includes tools and approaches from that period, so treat its examples as a guide to the concepts rather than a current checklist for setting up a new Android project.

For a grounded, example-led introduction to Kotlin for Android, Leiva’s book connects language features with the concrete decisions involved in building an app.
