Introduction

Interspersed throughout the book are my methods of drawing, my tricks as they have evolved, and my general philosophy—these appear alongside the software tools one uses to draw on a tablet. These personal anecdotes are for you to take as-is or to tailor to suit yourself. Each user can wield a tool the way they want to, in an effort to achieve their own personal goals; and accordingly, I wish this book to be another tool, a stepping stone, for you.

Get Started with Digital Drawing

A new medium brings new ways to achieve creative satisfaction, new ways of breaking limitations—but it also brings new fear. This book addresses this new fear by showcasing achievable results while getting you accustomed to the tool set. Art is a balancing tool for me. On days when I have to run a tight ship with children, travel, day-job logistics, and unknown and ill-timed emergencies, often art pays the price. These are the exact days when one needs to engage in drawing and painting.

Layers are Everything

The ability to build artwork in independent or dependent layers is the key strength of digital media. What does it mean to have independent layers? We are familiar with layers in traditional media: If you make a collage with the printed words glued on underlying artwork, one would say that the artwork lies on one layer and the printed words on another. Likewise, if you use watercolors, you know that you put down a wash of color and when you paint on top of this wash, you have added another layer. When you create digitally, this first wash is equivalent to a layer. All digital media allow us to add layers without having to wait for pigments to dry.

Going Deeper

We are at a point where we have basic technical know-how under our belt. There are two other tools that greatly affect the speed of drawing, and we will focus on those now.

Selection Tool

The Selection tool allows you to select an area of the canvas that remains active for drawing/blending/erasing. Typically, it is used to select delicate shapes that need to be colored finely without the color spilling outside this delicate shape. It is also used to move the selected shape to a different layer.

Leveraging Tools

You have now added digital media to your quiver of tools. It grows stronger as you practice and as applications develop. Can we do more than what is obvious with digital media? Stretching each tool to its maximum, to the point of absurdity is my obsession. It’s a philosophical choice really: to know the bounds of a medium, and then either I grow or the medium grows, or I dislike the results and I scale back.

Learn to incorporate the tablet into your art practice
I am a traditional media artist, specifically watercolors. I have resisted the ipad, though I had it for years and the pencil too, because it never gave me the kind of tactile pleasure I get when wet brush hits paper.I am a huge admirer of Uma, her art is inspiring of course, but what I love is how she pushes her experiments in art to the limits of absurdity and stops just short, such that her paintings resonate with that energy. In this book, I get a glimpse of how she uses the ipad as a tool to push her art – 1) ipad let’s you work when it is not possible to setup to paint 2) ipad let’s you do things that are not possible in traditional media, like make copies and experiment with different modifications.Due to quarantine, I haven’t yet used the tools in the book to do an urban sketch on the ipad, but I have used many ideas in the book to do little studies from reference photos.I think the book has just the right balance of inspiration and instruction. Great book!

A great addition to the Urban Sketching Handbook series
I pre ordered this little gem, and anticipated its publishing with glee. I own all the books in this series. Uma Kelkar did a great job putting it together to help folks who like to draw on a tablet, like me. I am not an urban sketcher, but the overall view of the usefulness of tablets and applications, in particular Procreate and Art Rage, should help me to get a better handle on drawing and viewing the world around me, and help me and others become more creative. It already has improved my perspective. Kudos to Uma Kelkar, an amazing artist, and to the folks at the Urban Sketchers collective.

,I still found new and exciting things in this well done book…
I just received my copy of this well done book, and I recommend it to you as iPad painters. Uma has done a stellar job of pulling together very clear and useful information for all who want to know more about using an iPad to express their art. She has included many examples from the Urban Sketchers who use the iPad, and I am proud to have one of my own paintings in the book. This is only one in the Urban Sketching Handbook series, all of which will increase your knowledge and joy in sketching.

An essential guide to digital urban sketching
I have been eagerly awaiting publication of Uma Kelkar’s new book. The book exceeds expectations: clearly written, well- organized, full of inspiring work by talented urban sketchers, and offering a roadmap for the novice to intermediate digital sketcher to get started, have fun, and build familiarity with this new medium. Uma provides practical strategies and tips, time-saving suggestions, exercises for exploring different tools, and with the addition of a supporting website, links to manuals and curated videos with instruction on technical skills. I highly recommend this book!

    Ready! Set! Draw!!!
This is an excellent book for the first time electronic drawer! Great suggestions and good tips! Uma also included some things to try! Not a “how to” book. It’s more of a “have to” book! You “have to” try this once you’ve read through! There are plenty of tips for the more experienced user as well! I have charged my iPad and Apple Pencil and am ready to explore procreate! Other apps are also discussed. Overall experience is great!

    Never leave feedback, but
I have a feeling this is probably a very good book, but unless you are young with perfect eyesight it is almost completely unreadable. The font is small and thin and not really black. It’s utterly frustrating to use as a “how to book”.It’s not the size of a textbook or even a novel. It’s the size of a sketchbook. Ridiculous.

A super digital painting book. I hope Uma Kelkar will write more.
At first I was afraid this book would be too advanced but it is really very user friendly and easy to understand. It is a great little book for anyone interested in creating digital art especially with Procreate. As an Urban Sketcher ,I love Plein Air painting and my iPad will now be going with me thanks to this book. All the Urban Sketcher Handbooks are just Great!!

Although I enjoyed looking at the artwork, the descriptive parts of the book gave very little advice for urban sketching on a tablet. You could easily get much better advice on a YouTube video. It did not give much of a “philosophical” approach. So, for me it was a waste of money

This is a quick basic romp through, and introduction to, the world of digital art with an overview of the main and compelling features of different software with some examples to try for fun. It is also inspirational with works from a wide variety of artists employing unique stylistic approaches to the medium.
