I can’t describe how exciting it is to follow the teachings in this book. The author has found a way to deconstruct, and then describe in clear terms, how accomplished artists draw. As Betty Edwards explains, usually when people who can draw are asked how they do it, they come up short. They just can, they don’t know how! The author however both can draw and she can describe how she does it. Through a series of practical exercises, she teaches how artists see the world. This book will be a revelation to anyone who has always wanted to draw. It will satisfy your left brain need for clear and logical explanations, as well as your right brain need to see the world anew, and depict it through line and edge, through light and space. I started 2014 with the desire to discover the artist within me and to manifest that. This book is enabling just that. It’s a miracle

The original Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was great but I sort of lost my way somewhere in the middle. The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain starts out similarly but starts changing some of the exercises about 1/3 of the way in. For wannabe artists like myself, it is a great way to learn about drawing – the first skill an artist needs. But if you don’t want to be an artist – as in drawing and painting- this book can still help you access your creative side. Doing so opens you up to creative solutions in all areas of your life. And, this book is an interesting read.

I haven’t got to the end and done my self portrait yet. I would promise an update later on but I’ll likely forget to do it.

This book was recommended to me by several artists. Makes sense and sequentially shows you how to draw better than you imagined you could.

This is a wonderful book that shows how much of drawing is proportions and attention. Drawing with your right brain is a challenge since your left dominates and ‘makes ‘ you draw things that way it thinks it should be instead of what the eye actually sees.

One of the most beautiful pages in a book I have seen.

I was a college art student struggling with my identity as an artist, and what field of art I wanted to get into. I lacked confidence in all aspects of my art, and this my friends helped to change my outlook and pursuit of art as a career. Before I had always been a decent artist, creating maybe one or two good pieces every once in awhile, and although it is still rare, I have much more consistency in my artwork as a whole. The only downside is I wish I would’ve pursued this book earlier, worked much harder, and luckily for me I have the same teacher this semester who made this a required reading in the first place. Which is exactly what I think this should be for every art student, or anyone interested in art. Betty Edwards is a flawless teacher, and the first who ever taught me anything about art worth knowing through a book. I would be honored to meet her and take a few lessons. Some chapters are hard to get through in the sense that it can be a tad bit boring, but they are all vital, and even people who are proficient artists should go through this book one more time, I know I will. And so with that I highly recommend this to all, and hope you enjoy this, and learn just as much as I have. Cheers.

It’s a good book but complicated. However, you can learn a lot from it from you use it in conjunction with art classes.

Bought it second hand but it came in great condition. It is written in a very clear way and offers great insights into drawing theory along with very practical instructions and exercises. I also have the accompanying work book, though this book would likely have sufficed.

It is excellent. Learn how the brain handles art rather than making excuses about not being able to draw. Do the exercises and become an artist.

Anyone interested in drawing and painting will find this book worth reading. While the information is valuable, the way Edwards presents the material is very instructive.

Great book really helped me improve my skills. However, this book is filled with a bunch of mumbo jumbo that I feels in there to pad the length of the book a bit. However, if you sift though it it’ll definitely help your drawing skills that’s why I still gave it a 5.
