This beautifully illustrated and exquisitely detailed book takes you on an unforgettable time-traveling journey through Chinese history.

Spanning 2,500 years and 1,115 miles (1,794 km), from Hangzhou in the south to Beijing in the north, China Through Time tells the fascinating story of China’s Grand Canal–the world’s longest and oldest man-made waterway. Meet emperors, armies, and soldiers from early Chinese history, and follow the construction and development of the Grand Canal up to the present.

Stunning panoramic illustrations and lively, engaging text bring to life key periods and turning points in the canal’s history. Cutaway views showing the interior of boats and buildings, picture pullouts surrounding each double-page illustration, and simple annotations highlighting important characters and places provide a wealth of detail that will stimulate children’s interest in the history of China. Children will also love searching for the time-traveling cat who appears in the illustrations, drawing them further into the hustle and bustle of each scene.

Perfect for parents and children to pore over and discuss together time and again, China Through Time also makes a gorgeous gift or collector’s item. Fun, interactive, and packed with compelling detail, it vividly presents Chinese history to children as they have never seen it before.

Content and figures were fine, but could definitely consider using a better quality of paper. The current used paper is very thin and feels like cheap.

I have owned copies of A City Through Time and A Street Through Time since I was in school, and have loved going back through to reread them every now and then. So I was very excited to receive this latest “through time” book for my birthday! Overall, it was a nice visual introduction to life along China’s Grand Canal. However, for some reason the scenes in this particular book are not in chronological order, which makes it a bit confusing to read. I found myself flipping pages back and forth to try and keep the timeline straight in my head. I will also say that while the artistic quality of these pictures was very nice, I found several of the scenes to be less detail oriented and contain more “blank space” and fewer characters in comparison to the scenes contained in A City Through Time and A Street Through Time.

This is a great book with outstanding pictures. As a teacher who studied Chinese history and is teaching Chinese now, I like it. But I hesitate to say I recommend the book because the book is not organized in a time order. That’s so confusing to me. I had a hard time trying to figure out what the page is about, even though I already have my Chinese history background. To fix it, I used sticky tags to generate a timeline on the top of each page. But I didn’t have to do it if the publisher did a better job. That’s why I took a star off. I took another start off because you will have to find the right pHe to read to kids so that they won’t confuse themselves. Other than that, this is a great book.

Beautiful Illustrations of the Great Canal! Really like the little tips that is along the book edge, and the details in each page. It’s a great book that shows the intelligence and hard work in the building of the canal.

Gives a somewhat short narration but does emphasize important periods in China’s history. Well suited for its age group and cleverly keeps the young readers challenged by concealing an animal that can be found (sort of hidden, like “Waldo”) on every page.
