Most of the negative reviews for this book seem to come from the fact that this is not a hardcover book. Why should it? The original Japanese release isn’t hardcover either and that it is missing some artwork. I’ve seen the Japanese edition and this Udon release are the same, except for the English text in the Udon edition.
As the for the content itself, this is amazing! Page after page of concept art from the game. Every single piece here it nightmare fuel and the fans of the game or horror games will love it. Like the game itself, there’s not much info behind each piece of concept art. I did find issue with the paper stock used by Udon, but other that this large book will make a nice addition to your art-book collection.

I absolutely adore the fromsoftware game art books and was extremely excited to get the bloodborne book. Beautiful design, layout and print quality. My only major complaint was that I wish it was hardcover! Would of make this a slam dunk for me. Aside from that it’s an amazing book and worth getting for anyone into creepy, gory and Victoria aesthetics

This book is awesome! Just what I wanted yet it had a small problem with the corner but it is paper back so it’ll happen anyways. The pages are nice and glossy and so much detail. The size is nice to see everything in the book. I hope this was helpful c:

This book includes concept art as well! I wasn’t expecting that. Honestly, I was concerned about the definition and quantity of the artwork renderings, but those were cast away once the book arrived. It’s a bit large, and hard to fit into a bookcase aesthetically, but I love the book and its contents as much as the game itself. Definitely worth buying!

I know a lot of people want to back up Udon and FromSoftware with the fact that this is paperback and it’s its own book, but I can see why people would be displeased with the fact this isn’t a hard cover nor is there an option for that also. The art is amazing and I still fully recommend the buy. However, it’s clear that they knew this would sell like hot cakes and because it’s a smaller publisher they went cheap to maximize profit. That’s the problem I have. It’s not a reflection of the quality of Bloodborne. If I was Hidetaki Miyazaki (I don’t know if I spelled that right) I’d make sure to go with Dark Horse next time. The final thing about the physical quality is that a lot of people say it’s not fun to compare, but in one sense you have to in order to gauge what a good, long lasting, and readable book is. In another you have to understand art books are collector’s pieces. Do I want to collect a fat magazine that may not hold up after 3-4 reads? Or would you like the lesser priced (for what I paid) Fallout 4 art book that is so thick and heavy you need a crane to read it? (Obviously that’s rhetorical for perspective) It is rather on par with some text books that could cost triple its price.
About the art, sadly I have the least to say here because you can only write so much about art from a game many of us have beaten repeatedly. Obviously the book has content we’ve never seen until now. So for the alternate designs of the weapons, characters, architecture, and maybe most importantly, the beasts, I’m extremely impressed. I could expect nothing less from the Japanese artists who took so much time exploring Arthurian Lore and taking the time to interpret old legends of western culture. All you really need to know is this book is worth it if all you want to see is the art and you don’t care that a great deal of other books on the market (for some games that aren’t even AAA titles) have much better physical quality.

This book is incredible. I have had my eye on it for a long time. I have been DMing a DnD campaign for awhile now and draw some of my inspiration from bloodborne. It’s opened me up to even more ideas. The artwork is beautiful.

What happened to this release? It feels like a rush job made with very little effort. I’m shocked at some of the 4 & 5 star reviews here.
Artwork is excessively dark and is incredibly hard to see (even in a bright room with no sunlight glare), and everything feels thrown together without much thought. Plus, paperback? Seriously? This should have at least been a hardcover. And the paperback spine this comes with looks very fragile, so i dont recommend spreading the pages open to much.
And yes, i KNOW Bloodborne itself is inherently a visually dark game, but it works fine on a nice screen where you can still make out the details after calibrating the contrast. But on printed pages?
Wow…. it just looks like smudgy darkness. I’ll try my best to include pictures that show how it actually looks in person, but much of the artwork just looks bad because of the print. Did anyone even QA check the artwork once it was printed? Because this is ridiculous.
So how about any additional artist input? Design input? None. Zilch. Nada. There isnt any texts included here to describe the design inspirations, artists intent, or interviews. Not even a foreword. You get a few lines of in game dialogue slapped on some pages.
Thats it. I mean heck even the Dark Souls design works had more information than this. And plenty of other ART books have had more information added in to flesh out the world. This is purely concept work slapped together in a poorly binded paperback book. This pales in comparison to other books like “The Art of Fallout 4”, which btw, is a hardcover, has more pages and costs THE SAME as of the time of this writing…
There isnt much point in owning a physical release to this because of how incoherent much of the artwork is. A PDF would have probably been a much better way to enjoy this artwork. 1 star, just because the actual art of the Bloodborne world is amazing, but it is not represented well here. If you buy this book, you will most likely do quick flip through and chuck it in your collection, never to be opened again.
Look elsewhere dear hunters.
