Loved this book!!! I bought it originally as a gift for my inventor/sculptor brother and had to get a copy for myself. The criticism that there are no instructions is of no concern to an artist. I found every item fascinating and so many triggered inspiration for my own work. I love all things Victorian and didn’t know of the new “Steam punk” term. I have used the term techno-Victorian or industrial-Victorian for 30 years. I am planning to get a third copy for my gadget inventor son who is a lover of anything technical or bizarre and has added computer programming to run just about everything in his house–by remote. He built a Tesla coil just for the fun of it. He will love the costuming as well as the steam punk lights and inventions.

This book is a nice introduction to the art of Steampunk. It’s not super fabulous but is worth reading for those interested in knowing about this particular art movement. It’s paperback and light/easy reading. The pictures of artwork are interesting and unique. Can be used to inspire someone to create their own mixed media artworks. I give this book a rating of 3 stars.

My son loves pulling things apart and checking out gears, springs, bolts etc, he picked this up in a hobby shop and couldn’t put it down. There are stacks of fantastic pictures of amazing machines, clothing, hats, guns, watches… extreemly beautiful creations, complex and unique. Really great book to get your imagination fired up.

This book fills the need for a good, comprehensive overview of Steampunk items created by professionals and amateurs. Divided into logical sections, the photos are generally good-sized, clear, and colorful. I might have liked some larger photos for some items or details of others, but it is still a very attractively done book.
If you’re looking for a DIY or a descriptive essay book, this isn’t what you’re looking for. There are already quite a few books of that sort available. So far, this is the first high quality pictorial Steampunk volume I’ve seen.
If you want to get a broad view of the many kinds of objects & artwork encompassed by the steam style, you’ll love this book.

I took a chance and pre-ordered this book. For the price, I expected to be at least mildly satisfied. Instead, I was stunned by the quality and content. As a long-time designer with a few awards under my belt and now a fine artist enjoying growing success in that as well, I have to say that this book would probably not disappoint even the most jaded. It contains way too much to take in at one sitting. The caliber of photography and designs of the objects themselves probably merit a much more expensive book. Even if “Steampunk” is not on your wavelength yet, just the explosion of modern ideas using Victorian sensibilities should be enough to please a creative mind.

This is the best steampunk picture book by far. If you want a lot of text and history on steampunk, this isn’t the one you want. But if you want scores and scores of high resolution photos of great steampunk works of 3-D art, this is the only one you need. Out of several steampunk books I have, this one is my favorite, just packed with pictures, and steampunk is, if nothing else, a very visual medium, whose work stirs the imagination. If you want text, get another book, if you want the best representaiton of what people are creating, this one is the definitive one.

“1000 Steampunk Creations: Neo-Victorian Fashion, Gear & Art” by “Dr. Grymm” (Joey Marsocci) with Barbe Saint John is a fascinating showcase of the work of over 100 artists of the steampunk subculture. The work is beautifully crafted and well presented. Although jewellery predominates, there are also sculptures, photography and 2-D art, clothing, headgear and accessories, and furniture. The style is strongly techno-Victorian, with a great deal of gears and goggles, clocks and corsets.
This is a book of a type familiar to artists and illustrators. After a brief introduction, the bulk of the book is pages dedicated to artworks, with descriptions and artists’ contact information in the back. The artists are overwhelmingly of the United States, with a modest number from the UK, Canada, and Australia and a scattering from the rest of Europe. There is one Japanese artist.
Actually, that brings up an uncomfortable question. Although it is impossible to tell the ethnicity of the artists from their works, I wonder if any of them are persons of color. This is a large book. There are many people in photographs in this book — models, mostly — and every single one of them is white. There is not a black, Latino or Asian person to be seen. It may be, apart from Haruo Suekichi, the lone Japanese artist, that some of these creators are nonwhite. But the lack of any but white models in the photos is troubling. Where are the steampunk artists of color?
Apart from that issue, “1000 Steampunk Creations: Neo-Victorian Fashion, Gear & Art” is very pretty and full of inspiring, well-crafted work. Fans of steampunk, interior designers, and artists should all find it an interesting resource.
