Since I made the decision to hone my own fantasy arts for future career hopes, I have been stockpiling the most helpful books to supplement my library with views, techniques, and ideas from those that work the field. I will with no shame say that the primary reason that I bought the book, was that the fantasy artisan Francis Tsai chose a Drown woman as the cover, and as one who finds them aesthetically pleasing, couldn’t help myself.
This book was on my birthday list, but could only be found here, so Happy Birthday to me, as I was not disappointed in the least. Francis Tsai delivered a great instructional book with a venerable wealth of imagery in a “1 through 100” lesson formart, of useful and interesting ways to get your fantasy creations from thought bubble to finished rendering.
I am beginning to suspect that he loves the Drow as much as I do, because they are used much in the instruction. As one who finds their look interesting too, well, sweeeet.
Impact publishing makes many a book to help the artisan get past the “white paper fright” of getting their feet wet in putting their fantasy works to paper, and getting the confidence to hone and learn.
This book will do just that. Inspiration and confidence on tap.

very good book for technique and reference

Great book for those new or wanting some inspirations for some fantasy art. Not recommended for those who know what they’re doing.
Still a great book to look at for minor inspirations.

I thought some of the graphics not suitable for my thirteen year old. Many of the characters lend themselves more to the dark and evil. If your into that we’ll there you go. Fantasy yes human sacrifice no. It does however give many hints and ideas of how to go about creating the characters and the art work is beautiful even if I don’t agree with what the author picked for some of his examples.

This obviously won’t teach you everything you need to know to paint or draw fantasy figures, but most of the 100 tips are great reminders to refer to whenever attempting to put together a composition. I found it a great complement to my existing library of reference material.

This book doesn’t get 5/5 for a few reasons. While this book is helpful, its certainly not a book for beginners. This is more a book of 100 tips for people who have a clear idea of what they want to draw, but can’t just get it perfect. While there are some very useful sketches showing each of the stages of a drawing, the book suffers from a lack of them (possibly 4-8 in total). The notes in the book are nice, as are the small tip boxes dropped in every now and again, though it feels they could be a little deeper in parts. One of the best features of this book is the art. Drawings are fully coloured and are of a very high quality, with smaller boxes displaying close-up inspections of each picture and the technique used. There is also a large number of pictures with span a whole page, or half a page of A4. These are very useful for picking up technique to be used in your own drawings.
Overall whilst not being amazingly helpful to a beginner, someone who has got the basics of drawing and shading/colouring would benefit a lot more. A good buy, but not as basic as I expected.

100 pratici consigli su come creare un personaggio fantasy studiando i clichè del genere, ma anche la vita reale (divertente la sezione su come adattare i nostri innocui insetti a temibili mostri o alieni). Attenzione, non è una raccolta di reference!

Extremely impressed with the content of this book. Good for young and old artists alike, starters or more experienced. Plenty of designs to choose and practice from.

The book gives numerous examples, and explains the way the artist thinks about each figure, why the figure fits into the category of fantasy figures he creates. He also discusses the importance of research, the proper proportions, even the figures’ stance and facial expressions that might be used with each figure.
For the beginner, it’s a great way to “learn the ropes” of character creation. For the pro, it’s a source of factual material that may get you thinking in different directions.

The author gives great advice about character concept design from imagination to the sketchbook. This is a perfect book for those who struggle with coming up with conceptual design.

Got this for my daughter. She is dabbling in art and trying to develop her drawing skills. She loved it. This one focuses on coming up with what you are going to draw…very important.
