Develop your own creative approach, no matter what your skill level with The Urban Sketching Handbook: Reportage and Documentary Drawing.

The third volume in The Urban Sketching Handbook series, Reportage and Documentary Drawing, is about drawing as a form of journalism or documenting life. This includes drawings events such as parades, music performances, sporting events, speeches, and can include everything from newsworthy political events to simply documenting a day’s adventures. It’s about being attentive to your surroundings, and telling that story through your sketches.

Artist Veronica Lawlor explains how to use art to find and tell the stories around you. From visual journalism to simply sharing your emotional experience of a place, a reportage illustrator has something to say to their audience. Just as there are all types of written stories to be told, mystery, horror, romance – this volume of The Urban Sketching Handbook series reminds artists, sketchers, doodlers, and illustrators that there are all types of visual stories waiting to be told. And the next step is to go out and tell them!

Some of the key concepts explored in this volume are:

– Observation

– Context

– History

– Ritual

– Understanding

– Storytelling

– Drama

– Documentation

Not really a “how to” or tutorial book, but more of a “here’s ideas to consider when you sketch” approach. It respects the reader’s ability to make those connections to their own interests, and I appreciate that aspect. The illustrations are appropriate and interesting, the book itself is small enough to easily carry if one wished to do so, and the text is to-the-point without a lot of filler. This last point is important to me. As an art teacher, I’ve seen more than my share of titles that take half the book to explain in excruciating detail the same tired cliches found in thousands of other titles that preceded them. A guide should do precisely that; this one does.

I am a big fan of urban sketching … often participate with the Dallas/Ft Worth USK chapter. This book is excellent … lots of ideas and tips on reportage drawing. Great examples, too … very inspiring! And the small size is perfect … I just throw it in my backpack and go!

I love every one of the books in this series. Haven’t run across a bad one yet. I keep them on my desk and refer back form time to time. Very useful and I love the size of the book. Easy to pick up and throw in your bag and thumb through as time allows.

o livro é bom, possui bons toques e técnica. mas deve ser feita uma avaliação mais completa antes de adquirí-lo. Veja se cabe nos seus propósitos, haja vista a grande quantidade de similares, com maior abrangência quanto ao conteúdo.

I like these books very much. They are concise but very informative and helpful. The smaller size allows me to take them along. There a few pages to add my own sketches.

This book personally to me has some very interesting, pretty, and inspiring sketches within it but I wouldn’t recommend this book at full price. It you see a well priced used copy I would recommend any artist to get it.
