Well-crafted and class-tested, this guide to figure drawing features a unique teaching method. It focuses on learning to draw complete figures prior to the study of individual components, and it stresses action figures rather than the customary static examples favored by most drawing and anatomy texts. Employing more text than typical art instruction books, it presents thirty figure drawing lessons and fifty-six drawings and figures. Each lesson includes detailed instructions on anatomical drawing, accompanied by visual examples of strokes, boxes, and measurements.
Author Alon Bement taught art instruction to future art teachers at Columbia University and later founded the prestigious Maryland Institute of Art. His students included Georgia O’Keeffe, who regarded him as a mentor and major influence. Bement’s nontraditional approach offers students at all levels an excellent opportunity to build their visual acuity and technical skills.

Within half an hour I was making something nice. I’m no artist, but I enjoy following the instruction. There are very few resources that teach line figure drawing to beginners. This is doable for doodlers as well as useful for more serious artists.

Although, this book does not go into human bone structure and muscle relationships, it shows how the human figure can be drawn using simple lines which are straight or curved. I learned something new by reading this book.

I loved this book so much (published 1921), I was very excited to find another book by Alon Bement. VERY DISAPPOINTED to discover it is, page for page, exactly the same book!
I can’t believe there was no indication in the lengthy description that it was the SAME book with a DIFFERENT TITLE.
Shame on DOVER for failure to indicate the ORIGINAL TITLE and that they elected to re-publish under a NEW TITLE.

I found this book helpful in learning to draw the human figure. Most books on the subject are similar in giving you a formula to follow for drawing the human figure and that does not work to well. In this book I learned to draw the human figure in motion by using simple free flowing line. I found the lessons easy to follow and I was up and drawing human figure from the start. The way this book is laid out its almost like being in a figure drawing class with an instructor.

I didn’t like this book. I thought it would be good as I am in to figure line drawing, but the excercises he gave were extremely difficult to understand. Not at all what I thought it was going to be.

Because this book was written in the 1920s and again in the 1930s, the stye of writing may seem strange. A few comments about race may even be offensive. Most important, if you are expecting step by step instructions, you will certainly not find it in this book. You will need a lot of patience. You will need to do a lot of experimenting until you get it. It seems that in-person instruction was a lot more common in those days, and the book was just a summary.

But still, I am very happy to have found this book. It is packed with concepts that are essential and timeless. I am definitely a much improved artist and a more confident artist now that I have worked my way through this book. And, it did not cost very much money.
