Should you buy these “art of FMA” books? Is it worth the money? Well, I was wondering the same thing. I bought the following 3 books:

    1. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist
    2. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist 2, and
    3. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Anime

They’re all the same publisher and size and look nice together on the shelf. The contents, as everyone here has noted, are 99.99% full color illustrations. However, for items 1 and 2, you also get small footnotes from Hiromu Arakawa. Her comments are very brief but revealing. I felt I learned something about what it’s like to be a manga author after reading about her feelings about each piece. If you are a fan, an artist, or considering becoming a manga writer, you should read it! Item 2 has a hilarious afterword by her in the form of a comic strip. For Item 3, there is an interview with Yoshiyuki Ito, the character designer for the anime (which Arakawa worked on only minimally). Personally, I much prefer Arakawa’s comments, she is just such a character! What must it be like to create the world’s most loved boy and robot? She must be on cloud nine. Roll over, JK Rowling. I’d rather be Arakawa any day! Ahem. End of review.

Though it’s a bit shorter than I’d like, considering all the other artwork I’ve seen from her, this is still worth the buy. Arakawa was a huge influence on my life as an artist, so I might be a bit biased, but her level of skill is definitely up to par, and the book even contains rough sketches of the different video game characters that don’t feature in the manga or anime.

I had bought this for my sister, who really likes full metal alchemist. She was really happy with it. I can’t say much since I never saw it, I sent it to another country directly, but she did show me on Skype. It had a lot of illustrations, obviously, however the only thing she said was it would have been better if there were more comments on it, as it was mostly just pictures.
