Sungsook Setton learned ink painting techniques from Chinese and Korean masters in her native South Korea; now she brings them to you in The Spirit of the Brush.
Chinese ink painting is one of the oldest continually practiced art forms in the world. First appearing in China in the fifth century, it soon traveled to Korea, and then to Japan. As old and deeply rooted in East Asian aesthetics and meditation as it is, ink painting is credited with influencing the development of modern Western art. Its minimalist approach to painting continues to have enormous appeal.
Author, artist, and teacher, Sungsook Setton is now bringing her years of experience to you with The Spirit of the Brush. You will learn traditional disciplines for holding and using the brush, as well as how to turn these techniques into inner meditation which will help your own world; city views, music, and the essence of contemporary life.

I don’t like this author’s art work but the book itself is chock full of the practical things you need to know and approaches to think about when you are trying to learn something from this ancient art that helps you to improve your own efforts at watercolor.

A lot of information packed into a compact space. The illustrations are inspiring and gorgeous to view. The instructions may seem intimidating at first but as the author says, “Practice!”

I have had the privilege of studying with Sungsook Setton and love this book. It translates to paper what she was able to communicate in class with clear illustrations and written descriptions. Her pictures are beautiful, unique and translate well to the book (though any opportunity to see them in an exhibit is well worth it). I have looked at many varieties of watercolor books and find this is one i return to again and again. Appropriate for both beginners to watercolor and chinese watercolor, and for experienced watercolor painters who want to expand their technique and style. It also expands the ways you will look at scenes in nature. Highly recommend.

Even if you do not want to get into the exactness of Japanese Calligraphy the illustrations and brushstroke tutorials are inspirational.

I love this book. I have several books about Chinese brush painting… this one is my favorite. It is a lovely book, very clear with very beautiful paintings. Oh how I wish I could paint like this! In South Mississippi a Chinese Master isn’t easy to come by! But I’m happy to have this book.

I wish i can return books because the content is not what i expected but i just keep it. this book is not so much on instructions but more about a few demo of the author’s work. I do not recommend buying this book if you seriously want to learn. There are better ones for that purpose.

One of the most beautiful introductory books on Chinese Brush Painting. I have a selection and each goes over the basics as does this one and then offers how to and examples. The book is a wonderful reflection of Sungsook Setton’s style. Wonderful illustrations and and quality book production. The Spirit of the Brush: Chinese Brush Painting Techniques: Simplicity, Spirit, and Personal Journey

A gift to the artist to read. It not only addresses students of East Asian Brush Painting but teachers as well. Gives clear well explained examples that professionals can use to teach as well as students to follow. The personal dialogue of the artist is a bonus and it makes you feel that you know her. The pictures are a beauty to behold. Because of its diversity of subjects, this book will become my Bible for Sumi-e.
