This book is intended for beginners of drawing, but it can be a good reminder of the essentials for those who have some experience. A good book.

The book has little value for absolute beginners and feels more like a show off of authors artwork – every second-third page is professional portraits, while there’s no face anatomy/portrait drawing explanation in the book. Instructions are quite vague. The info about basic shapes starts on page 57! And last 10 pages are just pictures of progress of drawing a full colour pastel portrait in “draw an owl style”: step 1 draw a circle, step 2 add details, step 3 success. Very odd to expect a reader to draw in colour and understand pastel, while the book never covered that info and only provided examples in black pencil. I’m just glad I’ve also ordered Mark and Mary Willenbrink book that actually gives good, very detailed advice. Maybe I’ll return to this book later.

This is a most helpful book on drawing. I found it very informative. I have read work and seen videos from this author before and he is excellent.

This book is really great to learn the mediums and keyword/concepts for drawing. It doesn’t go in depth about each, but it gives a good base to start and clear direction for artists. I also really appreciate the drawing exercises that this book provides for artists to perfect their line work. Even if you aren’t drawing this book is a good bases on art in general concepts like the golden ratio, background/foreground and perspective.
