The must-have guide for all artists who draw the human figure!

In Morpho: Joint Forms and Muscular Functions, artist and teacher Michel Lauricella presents a mechanical view of the human body. In the same way that paleontologists work, we can deduce the body’s muscular functions by studying the shapes of the bones. Starting with the joints, which are reduced to simple shapes such as pulleys and spheres, Lauricella teaches you their connections and correspondences with the muscular system, which is necessary for understanding movement.

Geared toward artists of all levels, from beginners through professionals, this handy, pocket-sized book will facilitate your practice of imaginative drawing and will enrich your drawing from observation. Whether your interest is in figure drawing, fine arts, fashion design, game design, or creating comic book or manga art, you will find this helpful book filled with actionable insights.

(Publisher’s Note: This book features an “exposed” binding style. This is intentional as it is designed to help the book lay flat as you draw.)

The content inside the book is very informative on how the muscles move and extend however the book arrived damaged and kinked I would prefer a hard copy rather than a fragile paperback like this.

I bought 3 of the Morpho books(Hands and feet, Fat and skin folds, and joint forms and muscular functions) and all of them are great references and study books. I draw comics and was able to make use of them immediately as references. Very easy to quickly open and find a useful reference on the fly.

The books are small, they are 7inchs by 5inchs. I personally love the small size. I’ve seen people mention the binding, that the paperback cover is not attached to the pages so I just wanted to say it’s supposed to be that way.

I really like the style of these books. It would be amazing to get more topics such as clothing/fabric from the same author. I would be interested in anything they choose to put out as I like their style.

I got this for my artist significant other. This was one of their favorite things they got for Christmas. Only complaint is that there are so many books in the series so I had to be careful I got the right one.

Thoroughly surprised and impressed. Lauricella’s book structure of drawings and diagrams efficiently explains how muscle groups work in unison and how that relates to specific movements of the joints. I’ve reviewed material from Michael Hampton and Proko, and although their reference material is great, although sometimes dry, Lauricella manages to fill in the gaps on how those muscles relate to each other in a simpler graphic way. I am thinking of getting all his books at this point after going through that fats and folds, and the skeleton landmarks one.

I wish I had known about this book when I first started my artistic anatomy journey, highly recommended for beginners and people with an intermediate knowledge of anatomy. Very useful for visualizing forms of the muscle joints when drawing from imagination. I would say that the most important thing is how you use an anatomy book for reference. I don’t mind the binding, I feel like it was done on purpose in order to lay it out flat when you take it on the go, this book is meant to be a portable reference.

This book series will always have a place in my library; What I find odd is the book format is small; that said way
not use a standard Black ink for the text instead the grey chosen? The text is small – would it have been more useful
to have used Black Ink instead of the hazy Grey color for a tiny text in tiny a book?
    Be-well,

My bad for not checking the size, yes they are tiny. young cat for reference. However, you probably need this book to study human figure. I say this because I have purchased: Proko’s online course, new master academy online courses, all Burne Hogarth’s books about human figure, head, anatomy, hands and feet, all of Bridgeman, Bammes’s complete guide to life drawing, Stanchfield’s drawn to life, Hale’s drawing lessons from great masters, annnnnnnnd I still see value in this book to make a purchase. Mainly because it gives numerus examples of how everything fit together, in action. With the sacrifice of wordy explanation, this series of books can provide many examples for study(meaning actually draw these, over and over again until they become yours). You can’t really learn anatomy in depth, this is not the book for that, everything else I mentioned above will probably help you with that(with the exception of Stanchfield).
    All in all:
Not as mechanical as Bammes, but more structural than Bridgeman.
Not as stylized as Glenn Vilppu from NMA, not as gestural as Stanchfield, but clear enough to get you through the understanding of human figure before moving on to those more loose approach.
Bottom line is: no one book will be able to teach you everything, so be prepared to add many of them into your collection and these tiny books are worth the purchase.

A lot of people are complaining about the size or the binding; the size is about the size of a graphic novel, it’s not super tiny. It’s appropriate for the price range. The bind is loose from the cover and appears to be stitched so it can lay open flat–most likely for reference. How many how to draw books come with an easy bind where you can easily hold it open and draw from it? Not many. I’ve been collecting how to draw books for two decades and this (and the others in this series) is a good find. You cannot find a better resource for this price range, and the images are clear sketches, they aren’t faded or anything. Good book. Glad I bought it. I am buying every book in the Morpho collection.

As a Full Tenured Professor of Art, the “Morpho Anatomy for Artists” book, specifically the “Joint Forms and Muscular Functions”, is a handy quick reference book. It is visually impactful and visually draws the anatomy of the human body well. While it does not give a lot of wordy explanations, it does visually communicate the movement of the body. I purchased this book to use in my classroom as a quick reference guide. It is lightweight and easy to access due to the smaller size. Packs a punch full of drawings to problem solve quickly how to draw anatomy. I highly recommend for upper level high school to college level sophomore.

This IS a very tiny book with not a huge amount of content. That said, this book has no frills, no unnecessary long winded text, no repetitive fancy showcases. This book is short, sweet, concise, and shows you complicated anatomy structure in simplified, easy to understand diagrams.

If anyone wants to get a better idea of how fantastic this content is, check out “mangamaterials” on Twitter, Pixiv, or Patreon. Her work is astounding and goes into way more detail, but delivers mapped out 3d structures in a similar way. I actually found this book because she posted about it.

This book is going to be a staple in my library, and I’m already going to order more from this author.

Bought 5 of this authors books now for my daughter. She says they are amasing and really help her art. the way the spine is glued 1 side means the pages lay flat. They are a handy size to carry around too. Definitely recommended.
