First, I am not a paid reviewer but I have had carving classes from Wayne and loved them enough to be a returning student. I anticipated this book and was not disappointed. I have many chip carving books from many authors. Wayne’s are my favorites of them but I am not unbiased.
What this book has: There’s a discussion of design that is not in his other books. It includes an extensive and inspiring gallery, often with patterns included. there are lots of incredible and inspiring photos. You get patterns for a lovely foliated alphabet perfect for central motifs for plates, box lids., etc. and patterns for Barton Capital which is a nice font to carve. Wayne includes tips and reminders to improve carving success and satisfaction. There are instructions for sharpening and holding the knives with photos. He provides photo instructions for one project start to finish including how he gets good results staining basswood, a notoriously hard wood to get even results staining. I am sure I have not listed everything.
That said, if you want a book for beginners the one you want is either The Complete Guide to Chip Carving or Chip Carving Techniques and Patterns (Out of print but worth getting a copy if you can). For more designs you may want the Design and Pattern sourcebook (You will still want this one too though). There are also videos available commercially and on YouTube. I will also state that while books make a great start, classes are invaluable if you really want to improve and get really good. (Not implying I am really good though my friends and family are pretty impressed. )

Wayne Barton is a chip carving master recognized around the world by those knowledgeable in this form of carving. Although not a beginning book, this certainly won’t disappoint a knowledgeable carver.
