There are two making-of books for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. One is this 144-page hardcover and the other is the 160-page hardcover ‘The Case of Beasts: Explore the Film Wizardry of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’.
You can think of this book as the condensed version of ‘The Case of Beasts’ even though there’s only a difference of 16 pages. The narrative here flows more smoothly like an actual book while ‘The Case of Beasts’ adopts a scrapbook-like presentation. The information within both books are quite similar so the main difference really comes down to the presentation style and narrative flow.
‘Inside the Magic’ talks about the film production, characters, setting up the locations, research, the story, Newt’s case and a brief coverage on the creatures that appear in the movie.
There’s a lot of interesting things to read as all these are behind the scenes. You can find out how they recreated 1920s New York, Macusa, or learn more about the characters, and read what the actors have to say about the characters. The content, text and pictures are also beautifully laid out.
As a standalone book, it’s great. But when compared to ‘The Case of Beasts’ which is also strangely on the film production, this book lacks the depth. The other book has more content. And since there is duplication of content as both books cover the same topic, it’s best to get just one, the other one.

I enjoy the book and the fine photography and illustrations. Nice hardcover binding and cover design.

Being a fan of the movie, I enjoyed seeing the nice photos and reading the text about how they made the movie and the special effects. Beautiful book.

The reason why one is unable to find magical beasts is because one does not know where to find them.

As a Potterhead, I really enjoy this book. In the final Chapter it explains what ‘really’ is in Newt’s case. I learned several facts about the movie and how much work they put into the amount of detail that 99% of the camera never shows. The dedication to making a Wizarding movie that is so real, was revealed.

I received this book today, and it’s amazing!!!!! The pages are so beautifully made, but the whole book itself is the whole package!! I love everything about it!!

Book provides good insight as to people interactions and concept credits but provides little insight as to the technology involved – I guess that most readers prefer to view that stuff as ‘magic’ and don’t want to be reminded that there is a lot of clever engineering involved. I find that understanding the technical developments and creativity to be at least as interesting as the fantasy.

This is not an in-depth review of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I would not purchase the hardcover version instead I would purchase the Kindle version of this book. For a thorough review purchase The Case of Beasts: Explore the Film Wizardry of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and/or Art of the Film: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I recommend purchasing the Kindle version of Inside the Magic because it’s better to use as a reference when you’re on the go and there are no extras in the hardcover 🙁

I’m definitely one of the biggest fans of all the HP books and movies. I love this book and how it shows how they made the characters come alive and relate!
