This is a pretty neat read. It’s not packed to the rafters with technique but you’ll come away with some away with a few new tricks up your sleeve when it comes to going about a Gothic inspired project or just in general. The book itself is very well laid out, with a good pace and not bogged down with text. The book is book, nice paper as well as color. I am a bit frugal so I’s say it’s worth the original price tag but I would certainly get it at a lower price.

I bought this book to assist with some fantasy drawings, it isn’t so much a step by step book, more a reference book. Seriously useful for artists that like to dabble in photoshop along with sketching. Worth the money but if you’re just starting out you might want something more simple.

Great book,and great art.
Patchy Kahn –
solid gold
Cminus –
Comprehensive step by step tutorials that show how to develop concept art and idea presentation. The artist shares experience, trade secrets and material listings for each of the demos. Michael Bukus is still one of the greats.

Butkus is awesome! It’s great to learn a little bit of his technique, which I just love long time. Reminds me Drew Struzan a little bit. Perfect!

This book made my day. I’ve known mike for about 8 years now, and he has helped me make the transition from “guy who likes to draw” to “professional illustrator.” Even when I do my professional movie poster comp work I refer to this fiendishly fun book for inspiration and guidance on how to get a little more magic in what I do.
Full of useful techniques and insights on traditional illustration techniques from a golden era of illustration that are rarely taught in the classroom anymore, Mike’s book is a valuable resource. And what’s even better is that these methods have been updated to take full advantage of digital painting as well. An awesome bonus is an oil painting illustration step-by-step by Mike’s talented wife Davin Chea-Butkus. Like I said in my review of his Zombie book (also a great book, by the way) it doesn’t matter what level you’re at or whether you want to draw “vampires” or “fairy godmothers” or “vampires eating fairy godmothers”…this book is for anyone who loves to draw.
Buy this book and Mike’s Zombie book as well. For roughly a dime a page, you get some absolutely incredible instruction, tons of inspiration, and a lot of fun.
