Shipping: a regular shipping was used and it took about a week (counting the weekend days).

This one is a used book. However, except for worn out cover along the top edge, the rest of the book is practically new. 🙂

There are 5 chapters: (1) Roundness and curves; (2) See-through garments and suggesting the body under clothing; (3) Accentuating particular body parts; (4) Attention-getting poses and situations; (5) Learn from the pros.

Hikaru Hayashi spends quite a number of pages going over the characteristics of various clothes. For example, there is a difference between a girl wearing a t-shirt with and without brassieres; their outlines are different. Another example, there is a difference between a heavy-weight rubber body suit and a light-weight rubber body suit; the heavier suit results in less contoured breasts because it puts more pressure on the chest. The key point is to pay attention to how to render different clothing materials and types.

One word of caution: this is not a book for those who are not familiar with figure drawing. Someone with a first-hand experience in figure drawing is more likely to absorb the details covered in this book. If you are not familiar with figure drawing, then learn figure drawing first.

04/08/2014: A few of pages in this book contains mature themes like chains, lingeries, leather/latex/rubber suits, plus a little bit of nudity. However, they are instruction-oriented and none of them have pornographic contents in any way.

I used to get these HOW TO DRAW MANGA books at the Walden Book Store in the mall, when I was a middle schooler teen growing up. Every time I get one now, I get the nostalgia memories of sitting in the corner on the floor of the store near the display window being surrounded by white shelves of books, and the sound of the echoing voices of shoppers in the mall. I used to love to draw and watch anime. Though I haven’t sketched in a few years, I still like to buy these now and then to add to my collection. It’s sort of a nostalgic hobby I suppose.

They helped me a lot back then when I needed help learning the shading techniques and wrinkles in the clothing, and male and female body shapes and structure. Now they might be a little outdated, but I still enjoy going through them for the memories of those trips to the mall and getting these at the Walden Book Store. The Walden Book Store, Wizards of the Coast shop, and Sam Goody were my favorite stores and the highlight of the trip. *Sigh* Good times at the mall back then. I wouldn’t trade those days for anything.

This is not my favorite of Hikaru Hayashi’s manga drawings books. It has a small section on shoes that’s okay – but other than that – not great. Lots of nudity and some unneeded, poor quality drawings of a erotic nature as well. I wouldn’t buy this one again.

First of all, this is an excellent resource, and if drawing beautiful and alluring women is what you wish to accomplish, this is a must have book. The rest of this review is dedicated to addressing the complaints that have been levied against this book.

First, some have complained that this book doesn’t do enough to teach how to start. This is because this book is not meant for beginning artists. It’s called “More about Pretty Gals”, implying that you have already learned about pretty girls and seek more information. Reading this before reading How to Draw Manga: BISHOUJO * Pretty Gals is like skipping a very crucial step; not recommended.

Second, many have complained that this book shows “too much” of the female anatomy, essentially amounting to fan service. The only complaint that should ever be levied against an art book, especially one dealing with anatomy, is that it shows TOO LITTLE. It is crucial that an artist knows every corner of the human anatomy, otherwise you’re likely to make huge mistakes when rendering the body. If you can’t take seeing a woman in bondage gear, or seeing a woman clinging to another woman (both of which are good lessons for clothing and physical character interactions), then perhaps you are not quite mature enough to handle detailed female anatomy. (Also, shouldn’t looking at the cover be a good enough reference to judge the rest of the book? How could the contents surprise you?)

I didn’t find a bit of this book that wasn’t useful. Showing women clothed in different material was very helpful, and also, the sections which focused on specific parts of the female body was helpful to me, especial the parts on rendering hands and the back. I highly recommend this book to any artist who wishes to render attractive women and is mature enough to handle it.

This is a good book it has a lot of information and idea’s. Like some other reviews have said this is not for kids it not pornographic but it does show the female body pretty well. I could definitely see even a high-school student getting in trouble for having this at school.
