Sketching as an art form concerned with the quality and volume of information requires three skill in communication, skill in composition, and skill in visual portrayal. The artist taps into these three skills while carrying out a clear plan. Manga sketching, which goes one step further, involves the skill of making the fantastic seem plausible. It also involves skills in determining the quality of the information to be conveyed and how much of it to convey. These last two skills form the focus of this book.

This was the last of the 5 Sketching Manga Style Books I purchased, and this was probably the best in terms of figure drawing. It covers a lot, from angles and posing, and they provide very detailed observations as to how their artists draw. These books are so helpful, it’s best to have all of them, and I really wish Graphic Sha would reprint these in English for us

I bought this book a few days ago and I absolutely LOVE it! There are actually step-by-step tutorials for poses, expressions, etc.; unlike the other books I’ve read over the years which just tell youu to draw this and that, basically they jump to conclusions too fast. But this is a very welcoming “How to Draw Manga” book! I absolutely love it!

    HOWEVER,
There is one thing you should know about this book before you buy it.

This book contains nuidity; so it’s not appropriate for those under 17-18 years of age. So be cautious when purchasing.
    But it’s nothing extremely erotic.

Overall Review: Great Book, definately worth the money! Just make sure young children don’t get ahold of it.

Sketching Manga Style 3 Unforgettable Characteristics is a must have for those who want to learn how to draw expressive characters from any angle. This book is GREAT for beginner / intermediate artists who want to get the proportions, angles, and forms right when they sketch characters.

In Chapter 1, you learn how to draw any face from any angle: Staring straight ahead, profiles, looking up, down and everything in between.
The book does an excellent job at treating the face and head as a 3D object and points out the changes you make when drawing the face at different angles.
There are also tips and examples on how to draw ears, noses, eyes, etc… This is outstanding reference material!

Chapter 2, Shows how a professional artist sketches a full character and gives examples of different poses.

Chapter 3, Does an excellent job at teaching you how to draw the body at any angle in any pose. Because you learned how to draw heads and faces in Chapter 1, the beginning of this Chapter focuses on the neck and shoulders. Once you get this down, the next section is on torsos. 95% of the anatomy in the book is for females, but the same rules apply to males. There are examples of how to draw the head and body tilted or leaning at different angles. Once you can draw heads and torsos, the next section is on the arms. The final part of this chapter is on the hips and legs. Because the book teaches you to think in 3D, you should be able to draw a Manga style character in any pose from any angle.

Chapter 4, Is mostly an interview with a few sketches as examples on how to portray emotions by drawing the face, body, and limbs in certain positions.

Chapter 5, Is about laying out a Manga Page. This chapter gives a few different Step by Step Examples of how different artists layout a page and bring characters to life. There are also some examples on how to draw tight and loose fitting clothing.

    Rare Testimonial from Poisonedblade!!!
For me, Chapters 1 and 3 were the most valuable.
Before I read this book, I could never draw a realistic body in a realistic pose. They never looked natural and I was hopeless at conveying emotions. But, I was pretty good at drawing faces. I spent about six weeks going through the book and sketching what was on the pages. I’m not going to be a professional artist any time soon, but I can confidently draw characters in realistic poses from my imagination or I can pause an anime and sketch the characters in the shot. This book has improved my figure drawing about 300%.

If you are a beginner or intermediate artist, I HIGHLY recommend Books 1 and 3 of this series!

If anyone has any recommendations about other books that will help me improve, can you leave them in the comments section?
Character Anatomy or Clothing Styles would be helpful.
    Thanks!!!

If only I had found it sooner!!

This book is great. It gives you pointers on drawing manga characters that I think all “how to draw manga” books should have. You want to learn more then how to draw a basic 3/4 view head? Tired of the same beginner crap that all how to draw so and so books seem to ONLY have? This is the book for you! It’s intermediate, yes, but in my opinion this is the book I’ve been waiting for since I started drawing anime characters!

Think you can’t be a manga/anime artist? Feel like your missing something instrumental? This book will teach you how to make your character have that “vibe”, and point things out that will move you on from flat simple character renditions to what you know is really inside that character.

Get it while you still can!

…Is selling this book two years ago. When I bought this book brand new in ’09 I paid $19.79. I purchased a few other things with it and also got free shipping. I’m a collector of manga and “how to draw” books and this was one of the gems in my collection. I absolutely adored the art style and layout of the sketches. It gives some basic instruction, but it could still be a little overwhelming if you’re actually a beginner. The instructional steps aren’t exactly a thorough walk through. However, the tips presented here are essential regardless of your skill level. I recommend this book to anyone interested in mastering manga. Or if you want to have a better understanding of how to go about customizing and making your own characters stand out. One should also be aware of the sketches of topless woman. It didn’t bother me personally, the human form, even in a manga style, is art. Though I know some parents might feel funny about their kids having the book due to the nudity.

To help with my school tuition, I sold this book and received double what I paid less than a year after original purchase, thinking it was a good profit. I figured I would just buy the book again later, but unfortunately the cheapest I’ve been able to find it is $100 USED. I remember at one point it was being sold for around $399. Yikes. When/if this book drops to a decent price I suggest grabbing it fast as you can.
