Learning to sketch can be intimidating, especially when drawing subjects like architecture that seem to rely on perfect perspective, straight lines, and complex forms. In Housesketching, artist and instructor Albert Kiefer (Housesketcher) shares his signature techniques that will enable and empower you to abandon perfectionism and learn to sketch and express yourself creatively, like his tens of thousands of students have done. Whether you work in pen and ink and alcohol markers like Albert, or use your favorite medium, you will learn how to create amazingly expressive drawings.
From his whimsical linework to his playful use of perspective to his energetic colorwork, Albert’s approach can be applied to any type or style of building—or any subject at all! Housesketching shows how to go beyond representation to create sketches that are evocative, vibrant, and completely unique.
With this encouraging guide, you will learn how to:
- Find inspiration and choose subjects to sketch—either en plein air or from photos
- Compose your sketch with placement, contrast, techniques for guiding the eye, and balance
- Use perspective—but only as much as you need to know!—to create a convincing sketch
- Make a sketch your own through editing, exaggeration, point of view, and creating a back story
- Use color and details to finish and embellish your sketches
- Share your sketches online
Fifteen step-by-step projects take you through Albert’s process in detail, so you can sketch alongside him and learn what makes his drawings so dynamic. QR codes link to videos that provide further insight into essential techniques.
Whether you’re completely new to sketching, interested in learning to sketch architecture, or looking to draw more expressively and creatively, Housesketching will give you all the tools, inspiration, and encouragement you need.

Excellent technical study. This book is very well designed and builds precept upon precept. I had the benefit of taking his online class before purchasing his book (If you have not done this, I highly recommend it!) and found this book to echo his teaching style. It serves both as a technical guide and a quick reference. The artwork is also enjoyable all on its own. Albert is a clear communicator and balances imagery and text such that you will learn and stay engaged. Highly recommend.
SHIPPING NOTE: The book was packaged in only a thin plastic bag, allowing the book cover to be torn a bit and some pages wrinkled. It’s not significant enough to return, but a bummer.

Magnifique! Un artiste illustrateur à decouvrir. J’ai adoré essayer de reproduire son style même si je n’ai pas son talent .

I received this book yesterday… and I absolutely love it.
I was initially in two minds about purchasing it, because I don’t colour with markers, and I have no intention of colouring with markers. But having downloaded the book sample to my kindle app, I had a good feeling about it.
I’m so glad I made the decision to buy it.
I’d recently hit a dry patch with my sketching. I was a bit lost, not knowing what direction to take. I totally lacked motivation. But this book has been a game-changer.
Already, I’ve learned how to apply Kiefer’s loose approach to linework. My sketches were far too stiff, but this book has described how I can loosen up in my approach. It has been a revelation, and I’m suddenly excited about sketching again.
I use watercolour rather than coloured markers to colour my artwork. But although the book is geared to using markers, I will adapt the advice and information to suit using watercolour.
Chapter 3, The Projects, is worth the price of the book alone. I am so re-energised, particularly by this particular chapter. I had actually stopped sketching altogether, stupidly waiting for something to come along and re-motivate me.
And, totally out of the blue, this book did it.
If you’re in two minds about purchasing this book, like I was… please go for it. I’m convinced that it will make a difference to your creativity.
Already, it is making a big difference to mine.

This is an excellent book. Very detailed and a lot of really useful information. It has inspired me to try markers which I have my never used before. The quality of the print is very high. The images of his sketches are superb. The step by step projects are easy to follow. I’m really happy to have bought this book.

I am enjoying this book and style of art so much. Great instructions and examples that produce wonderful results. I took Albert Kiefer’s domestika class and enjoyed that too. If you have an interest in sketching this book is well worth buying, you certainly won’t be disappointed.

Bought this for my daughter and she loves it. The graphics are similar to some of the Anime she likes and also some of the Nintendo games e.g. Prof Layton. The examples are clearly set out and provide a basis for working your own ideas.

This has to be the best instinctual art book I have brought. It reads like a class with detailed instructions of equipment needed and steps for each project, there is also a wealth of tutorial videos available via QR code. Full of beautiful images and author insights. A must have!!

Empfehlenswert.

Loved the book. Has become my instant favourite on the bookcase (and I have a lot of art and craft books!). I wish all art books were as user friendly and colourful as this, it’s really easy to follow and so informative and based at adult level, not at children, though no reason children couldn’t have a go. I really like how each project has all of the steps and he doesn’t skip over anything. I haven’t tried the qr codes to the videos yet, as still reading through the book, but amazing content. I highly recommend both this book and the course on domestika. Well worth the purchase. Very happy with book.
