Speechless. Just starting to collect art books from my favourite films and video games. The Art of Destruction is not just an art book! It’s a making of the film. You learn so much from every page. Worth every dollar. I’ve watched Godzilla since I was a little kid and at 19 years of age, this very film was a dream come true to watch.

I got today and I am very impressed, came in factory sealed and save for the pages. They are very crisp, glossy type and the art spread across the book are just impressive. The renderings of Godzilla from different artists and a give away poster of the film also makes this “The Art of” book stand out. The dusk jacket that features Godzilla on a black and red photo is just astounding and sets the tone of the book. Haven’t gone through the texts but I’m already stoked by the renderings and photos this book contains.

A must for any Godzilla fan.

Ever since I watched Godzilla as a little’un, I have always been fascinated; but when I watched the 2014 version……. I was speechless…..defining it as brilliant was an understatement. Incidentally, I decided to buy this book and all of the art in it and how it was made….. its fantastic. Even if you think its a bit expensive, its definitely worth it. If you love Godzilla, you WILL love this book!

I enjoyed the behind the scenes look on: making of the film, directing by Gareth Edwards, return of Godzilla to the big screen, the process of designing the new Godzilla, reading the storyboards, seeing film locations, ideas that they thought about using, actors insight into the film and the scale of it, and how Legendary was able to revive the King of the Monsters while paying their respects and homage to the King himself.

A definite buy for fans of the new Godzilla film and a good read for Godzilla fans in general, to see the new direction Legendary is taking Godzilla.

The book was packaged very well, arrived promptly, and in excellent condition. The artwork inside the book is beautiful! My granddaughter also loves being able to read information about this particular movie, along with viewing the artwork. Overall, a beautiful book!

This book delivered what I was hoping for – the design process that resulted in the new Godzilla design. Beautifully illustrated and accompanied by commentary from Gareth Edwards, this book was clearly created with the audience in mind. I believe Edwards when he says he wanted to create the kind of book he’d want see as a fan of this genre. I wish there was more design dedicated to the Mutos as well. While not as in-depth on the Godzilla design as the Smaug book, it still delivers on the promise of an “Art of” book. Not just a bunch of production key images but true iteration that gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the creative exploration.

I was impressed upon first glance! Very classy coffee table-type book. The illustrations are excellent, hi-res, and crisp. There’s an elegant surprise on the hard-cover when you take off the jacket. Even though it is graphically-heavy, I am surprised by how much text there is to read! There is so much behind-the-scenes info that it makes me want to see the movie again and again to take it all in. Hey, it even references Terrence Malick at one point – can’t go wrong with that!
Excellent production. Highly recommended for fans of Godzilla, artists, or both!

“Godzilla” is a film that features many technical and creative achievements. “The Art of Destruction” is a book which provides an overview of the film’s production as well as a lot of imagery from the movie. This is one of the better movie art books out there. Practically every sequence in the movie is represented in the book – whether it be concept artwork, storyboards, or production photos. For that reason, I’d recommend you see the film before looking through this book (but once you do see the film, you’ll probably be interested in taking a closer look at the designs contained within).

A large number of pages are dedicated to the title monster’s design – and not just his final finished look, but all sorts of different conceptual design elements that were not used in the film. You really get to see the evolution of the creature’s design and you realize just how many iterations the artists went through before finding exactly the right look.

    Included in the book:
    – Foreword by director Gareth Edwards
    – Godzilla designs (including a fold-out page)
    – Muto designs
    – Concept Art of various locations and set pieces
    – Storyboards of key sequences in the movie
    – On-set photos w/ cast

Godzilla: The Art of Destruction is actually more a “art and making of” book that just solely an artbook.

Plenty of reading material on the movie production are included with the artworks. There are a few paragraphs of text every double-page spread. They are really insightful and talks about the different aspects of the filming process, writing the story, designing creatures and sets, and interesting bits about making the movie. The lengthy writeup really provides the book with depth.

The concept artworks included are fantastic as well. You’ll get to see the different variations of Godzilla and creatures from different artists along with director Gareth Edwards comments on each design. It’s interesting to see the design iterations. There are different skin, texture, scales and postures for the giant star of the movie.

The rest of the artworks are scene paintings of story beats. Those are big, beautiful and detailed paintings with very cinematic look and feel. They really nailed the lighting, camera angles and atmosphere. Other visuals included are photographs shot behind the scenes while filming.

Lastly, it includes a fold-out movie poster of soldiers diving from the sky with red smoke and Godzilla’s huge scales in view.

Overall, I’m pleasantly surprised at the amount of content packed into the book. The art is great and the writeup provides a nice overview on how the film is made.

    Highly recommended.
