Readers will be pleased with this book if they are interested with the design of the Alien film not so much the theme of the film or Giger’s art. The book is set up in pseudo biographical form that records the chain of events that led up to the production of the Alien film, through the eyes of Giger. While it does contain many of Giger’s paintings they are not the center of the book rather than a means of describing film design and offering a contrast between Giger’s vision and the outcome of the film. This is a terrific look behind the scenes from Giger’s perspective on the making of Alien, and is a refreshing change from 20th Century Fox’s take, as normally seen in bonus DVD’s etc. My God the studio really gave him a hard time and it is a wonder he didn’t tell them to shove it. However it appears Ridley Scott loved his work and more than once battled for Giger’s corner to get what we now know and love in this classic film.
The writing style of the book reminds me of the film itself as the tension grows throughout, wondering if the film crew would ever get the set and monsters completed in time for filming. Compromises were obviously made but it doesn’t seem to detract from the finished film. However some of the artwork and props that weren’t included in the film are truly superb and it makes you wonder how it would have looked if they had the time and money to use them. The transluscent Alien and eggs and the eggsilo/shaft are cases in point.
This book was published some time ago but for some reason I only just bought it for myself recently as a xmas present. What a joy it was to read and the photographs and illustrations are all good quality. I thought I’d seen everything ever printed about the film so it was a welcome surprise to see material new to me. In other words I thoroughly recommend Alien lovers out there buy this book, you won’t regret it. I would have liked the hardback edition but I see from reviews it is written in German only – pity.

En achetant ce livre, j’avais en tête des illustrations toutes sur le thème d’Alien(s) mais en fait, j’ai été un peu déçu.
En effet, le livre, même si il fournit un grand nombre d’artworks, passe aussi beaucoup de temps à nous parler des effets spéciaux des films, des prothèses et autres costumes réalisé. C’était pas vraiment ce que je recherchais, donc je préfère vous prévenir, c’est beau, c’est intéressant, mais ce n’est pas réellement un artbook, plutôt un livre Making Of avec des illustrations dedans. Le format est chouette, grand et le papier de super qualité.
