Framed Ink 2 provides insight into another compositional tool that Mateu-Mestre uses every day to create his amazing artwork—the energy within the working frame. In each piece of art, regardless of its format, one must consider essential factors such as the push-pull, tension-relaxation, pressure-release, balance and imbalance that happen inside the working area to support our storytelling. All of these factors apply in any aspect ratio, whether it be horizontal, vertical or square, each a format to consider when working in the movie, gaming, animation and graphic novel industries, which in our day and age can be presented through a variety of outlets such as a movie theater, home theater, social media and a number of personal devices.
Mateu-Mestre encourages and educates us on how not to be limited by the format but to embrace and rise to the challenge of designing for each format. A perfect accompaniment to his prior releases Framed Ink, Framed Perspective Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 and Framed Drawing Techniques, this book will take a reader’s knowledge base to the next level and allow them to build on their expertise as an effective visual storyteller.

Full disclosure I have every book in this series. I also have 20-30 books on illustration and composition. While other books tell you what compositional choices you can make, they don’t really go into why would a person would make that choice. This book does that.
While the first Framed Ink gives examples for composition and their basic goals, this one goes into the “why” those choices are made.

I don’t have much to say other than this is an amazing follow up book. Usually subsequent books from a series that really hit all the good notes turns to be not great, this one is amazing. It has a similar structure to the first but addressing completely different things. And in a way, even if you hadn’t seen the first, you can absorb well the content from this one. Although I highly recommend that you do read the first book before diving into this one, just so you spent your time more efficiently. Amazing book!

Glad to receive the book in good condition. The author shares his techniques to create stories through the technical jargon of the comic book and visual drawings.

Toda su obra debería de estar en cualquier estantería de las personas interesadas en el mundo gráfico y audiovisual.

Marcos delivers another great guide for visual storytellers!!!! All his books manage not only balance the practical and the inspirational, but the necessary connections between the two. Readers are never left with technical knowledge but no ideas how to apply them, nor are they merely given beautiful examples without the guidance necessary to achieve similar results. Highly recommended, as are all the books!!

I own all of Mateu-Mestre’s books and his “Framed Ink” volumes are the best of the collection. When compared to several other books on composition that I’ve read and own, I find none of them come close to explaining such an abstract subject with precision like he does here. There are tons of diagrams and images that clearly lay out the concepts he’s teaching, so well to the point where you can grasp most of the ideas he’s explaining without even reading the text. The author really knows his stuff when it comes to arranging powerful images.
I highly recommend this book. Money well spent!

All of his books come highly recommended. Very valuable knowledge. If you’re serious about levelling up then you will do no harm to own and collect all of the books as a collection.

I had read the Framed Ink volume 1 and now finished reading volume 2. I recommend reading both volumes, and would go on to say to read the “Perspective” in the series. They all contain up certain very important information for aspirants and working professionals in the field of comic art especially. The books(vol. 1 and 2) help us construct and plan on composing shot by shot and panel by panel, by capturing the essence of story moment. I am glad I read this the knowledge I acquired through these books act as a basis for all my on-going and future projects. I would like to thank the author for the wonderful effort to convey the information.

It’s a good book and excellent if you own Framed Ink #1, plus any of the other books from the author.
Note: the main focus of this book is compositional flow and where your subjects main focus should be. That said, it is missing some important compositional elements (framed or not).
For primarily a “composition book,” I feel very little attention is paid to “background, midground and foreground elements,” and the different ways they effect composition. A whole chapter is missing on this subject alone, in my opinion.
The “golden ratio is also missing” and other elements of composition like the “rule of thirds & such, is only vaguely mentioned.
In my opinion, if you’re going to make a “composition book,” for an artist, all elements of composition should be addressed in full.
Flow and the focus on your main subject, is very important for good composition in your artwork, especially “framed” comics.
However, all elements of composition are important if you want great composition, be it comics, a portrait, landscape, “framed” or otherwise.

Marcos Mateu-Mestre’s approaches topics on composition that have been intuitively picked up by popular artists that no one else seems to document as effectively in clarity and practicality. The material is more of an extension from Framed Ink 1 on how we can adjust our paneling/framing for different formats and aspect ratios. With the rise of mobile devices with varying screens/social media platforms with different aspect ratios, Marcos covers different techniques in adjusting the storytelling into frame showing us to not to forget what format we are presenting our work in.
