This book as a lot of cool stuff crammed into it. Of course it has artwork but also takes a look at the creative team’s design philosophy, cutscene pre-renderings, character profiles, lore and more. The two coolest things in the book to me are the clothing design process and the Midgar timeline. When designing character clothing they actually had a lot of the in game costumes created in real life and had models wear and move around in them to see how they should be animated in the game and they show that process here. Even going so far as to make Rufus’ outfit. The Midgar timeline is the kind of stuff I like to see in these kinds of books, more background on things we don’t get to see in the game. Think of it as the Zelda timeline in Hyrule Historia. Any fan of the game should pick this up. Hopefully they do something similar for Rebirth.

Are you a sucker for details? Did you like those “behind-the-scenes” DVD bonus features, where there’s a documentary about the making of your favorite film?
This is an amazing book that really deep dives into all the nitty-gritty details of Final Fantasy VI Remake’s development. From the outfits our beloved characters wear, in-depth storyboards for the cutscenes, even the thought that went into all the miscellaneous things that bring Midgar to life. The graphic designs of the advertisements you’d on the plate and in the slums, details from the composers when it comes to the wonderful soundtrack. Heck, this book even goes into detail Midgar DIETARY HABITS. There is an extensive, thorough outline of the culture of Midgar and the different sectors down below, in the slums.
The development team thought. Of. EVERYTHING. It is so impressive how much love and care is going into this project. It even gives a taste of how sidequests are developed, showing cut material from a Tifa focused sidequest that didn’t make it into the game. It’s very interesting to me to see how the developers think when crafting this game. ALL the moving parts, for which there are many.
If you’re at all fascinated in the ins and outs are developing a AAA Final Fantasy, especially the likes of a beloved behemoth like the FF7 world, this is the book for you. If you’re a FF7 maniac and want to learn more about what made this Remake so incredible and uncover some lore, this book has that. There is so much information in here, but if you love learning about the intrinsic details everyday folk might not pay attention to, I highly recommend thud Material Ultimania.
I loved reading the little blurbs from the developers, joking and reminiscing and giving insight into what went on during the development stages. There’s even interviews from the Japanese voice cast, which was fun to read about, too.
There’s just so much content in here. Very happy with my purchase, aha.

Not a big fan of the FF7 Remake game, but absolutely love this book for the huge amount of concepts and behind-the-scenes information. Apart from the usual characters and environment artworks, included in the book are storyboards of cutscenes, breakdown of the music compositions, interviews with the voice actors/actresses as well as background information of the world of FF7. A worthy buy!
