I am looking at the book as a potential text/reference for my figure drawing classes. At first run through, it seems like a solid approach to tackling the most challenging drawing subject.

A good worthwhile explanation of techniques of basic life drawing but if you really want to sail the learning to draw by both the Anatomy and the Gestural Figure Drawing that Robeert Beverly hale used as text books when he taught at Colombia. The late prof. is one of the noted Professors that has taught many of todays best Gestural and realism techniques to. You know the Pope was Going to have MicealAngelo killed because he knew a bishop that would allow him to “borrow bodies that he could study. You have to know why and what is underneath that makes that shadow on a woman back on either side of her spine, I love that place. But this cat I think just needed some bucks.

An excellent book on the figure.

In the stilted studio environment with unnatural naked adult poses, this author is a skilled technician. His work is exemplary. However, his statements are vague and extremely dated suggesting poor basic understanding. e.g. “Sweeping lines and turning shadows” Yet, I give the book five stars because it honestly reflects the state of art education today. Most people buy an instruction book for techniques that lead to improvement. This book like dozens of other drawing instruction books suggest that you “draw a lot and somehow you get better because I did.” There really is no instruction on how you should progress just a grab bag of technique variations that the author likes. Still, I like the author’s drawings. A lifetime drawing worked for him.

This is a brilliant book and I read it from cover to cover which is saying a lot as I tend to get bored half way through – very informative and very inspirational
