Figure Drawing for Artists: Making Every Mark Count is not a typical drawing instruction book; it explains the two-step process behind juggernauts like DreamWorks, WB and Disney.
Though there are many books on drawing the human figure, none teach how to draw a figure from the first few marks of the quick sketch to the last virtuosic stroke of the finished masterpiece, let alone through a convincing, easy-to-understand method.
That changes now!
In Figure Drawing for Artists: Making Every Mark Count, award-winning fine artist Steve Huston shows beginners and pros alike the two foundational concepts behind the greatest masterpieces in art and how to use them as the basis for their own success.
Embark on a drawing journey and discover how these twin pillars of support are behind everything from the Venus De Milo, to Michelangelo’s Sibyl, to George Bellow’s Stag at Sharkey’s, and how they’re the fundamental tools for animation studios around the world. Not to mention how the best comic book artists since the beginnings of the art form use them whether they know it or not.
Figure Drawing for Artists: Making Every Mark Count sketches out the same two-step method taught to the artists of DreamWorks, Warner Brothers, and Disney Animation, so pick up a pencil and get drawing.
The For Artists series expertly guides and instructs artists at all skill levels who want to develop their classical drawing and painting skills and create realistic and representational art.

I have such a huge artist crush on Steve Huston that I was positively salivating when I heard he was putting together this book. I have not been disappointed. What a delectable book! There is something for everyone from beginner to old timer. Huston’s work is masterful and he is a pretty good teacher, too. There are lots of art books out there, you’ll be hard pressed to find one that is as readable as this one is.
Read this book. Draw along with the chapters. In the end you will be a better artist. Simple as that. Money well spent.

What a remarkable book! Steve Huston breaks down drawing the figure into an understandable and attainable skill for both the beginner and the professional. The methodology is clearly shown in his examples and the narrative is insightful. Teaching the ability to put “life” into figure drawing, this Master artist leads the reader through the fundamentals building a foundation on which the drawer is not just depicting a solid figure, but a figure with life and movement. A wonderful teacher and deep thinker, Huston reminds us of the need for studied practice while inspiring us to continue on the path to attaining the skills needed to speak the language of art. A true treasure in print.

I have so many books on life and figure drawing that it looks like an obsession! This wonderful book by Steve Huston measures roughly 22 x 25 cm and contains 192 pages. Huston is a consummate draughtsman and his drawings are exquisite. Like many books there’s an emphasis on the basics – anatomy, perspective, light, gesture etc. The sequence is logical and his method of drawing superb. There are lots of exercises in the book and reference to old master drawings to demonstrate certain points. The final section in the book is called “Five Minutes” and refers to a daily practice routine. Huston points out that the artist Anders Zorn practiced for 12 hours a day, but that is impossible for most people so just try and do five minutes. It’s good advice!

Indispensable tool to take your figure drawing to the next level.

This is an excellent book: it explains the basic importance of gesture, structure and form. It is only when a well rendered drawing is developed over these three aspects that a figure drawing has life and believability.

This is a good instruction source. Mostly good. Useful. However, the author invents terminology, which is difficult to follow, because he uses the words already defined differently in the real world. Many sentences require translation in normal English to understand what he actually said
Quality of the illustrations is great. However, the binding is poor, and the book falls apart into separate pages once you open it.

I also watch Steve Huston on YouTube and have learned a lot about face and figure drawing. Very kind and inclusive instructional approach – makes drawing approachable.

This guy truly knows his stuff. I like his way of teaching in video and in person, theres eloquence in his teachings and this book is no different.
This book paired with an understanding of anatomy is best. If one has seen Steve Hustons videos or one on one workshops one can immediately see bis draftsmanship on this difficult journey of figure drawing. I had the pleasure of seeing a one day workshop of Steve’s and one needs to understand he can’t explain every detail of figure drawing he doesnt have time to explain everything you need to know. It’s like having JK Rowling read the whole harry potter in one day. What Mr. Huston provides in this book is a starting point for many artists, which i wish I had when I started, and a different angle on figure drawing. I have two anatomy books to help with anatomy so suggest you do the same. If you bought this book is because you still need help, and I beleive gesture amd proportion is mostly everyones weakness well if you truly take the time to use this book you will get better, or atleast making ever mark count.

I love Steve Huston approach to drawing the human body. He use simple analogy that are easy to remember. I have followed his classes on New Master Academy, and now part of his Patreon. However I do like having his book on the side as there are a lot of master study, and it’s just convenient to have Steve’s drawing and demonstration, aside from my notebook.
Honestly from the other comments saying the book could have used some editting, I really do not feel this this alter at all the value of the content. To me this is a no-brainer, buy the book!
