I bought this book to get an overview of federal period furniture construction after visiting the MET collection. The author has done their homework, and the pieces described in the book are stuff that’s nice enough to devote some love and care to in the shop. Classy stuff, even though I prefer the Japanese aesthetic.

Cover important aspects on Federal furniture. Well written, good illustrations. Suits both the woodworker and people with general interest in the subject matter.

This shows a publication date of 2019, but is simply a paperback reprint of the 1985 original. That matters because the publisher didn’t bother to fix/improve the photos, but left the low-contrast, grainy B/W photos typical of woodworking books of that era.

That said, at first glance, the author does a good job of covering every aspect of federal furniture, including detailed drawings. Each project highlights a specific skill and feature—string inlay, edge-banding, rope carving, etc. Oddly, the one thing missed was fan inlay. This is so typical of the period that there are fans on the book cover. Too bad there isn’t a “Look inside” feature on Amazon.

If you are strictly an academic then maybe this book is for you. All the pics are black and white and often underdeveloped photos that leave you uninspired. Compare this to Tony Kubalak’s book; there is no comparison. The detail and color of every photo is engaging and draws you in to every project.

But then anyone buying Mike’s book already knows this. It is a classic in its field. Information on Federal style furniture is getting harder to come by. Anyone know of any plans for Federal style end tables?

Like the title says it’s a good primer for Federal Style Furniture. It has several projects including measurements for those projects.
