I ordered this book for my daughter who likes drawing and wanted to learn more about human anatomy in order to improve her drawing skills. This book is quite detailed, but the author has also tried to make it manageable and present only the most important details that would help you draw portraits and the human body. The book is easy to follow and understand and starts with a short introduction of tools and techniques for drawing. The explanations of bones and muscles are detailed and shown from different angles and the author offers a thorough explanation of each bone and muscle (including how it is called, what it does and how it functions). The book also includes facial expressions and movements and explains the anatomy behind these. My daughter is only 13 and has never studied anatomy, but said the book was easy for her to understand and very helpful in her quest to become better at drawing the human form. The book is a large format, but not very thick (about 200 pages), so it is easy for her to carry around. All in all, we are very happy with this book as a first introduction to anatomy for artists.

As a graphic designer, I look for inspiration but also guidance when it comes to designing. One of my weaknesses has been drawing people in motion as well as to give them details such as faces and body muscles. This book provides a great overview of this and more to give me great pointers on how to breakdown each thing into simpler shapes or patterns. It sits now next to my drawing tablet for quick reference.

Extremely helpful to artists. Excellent exercises to follow. Great explanation of what lies under the skin to help you draw your figures. I found it very helpful for my painting and drawing. I would recommend it to my fellow artists.
I received this galley from NetGalley.

Honestly, surprisingly great book! I love how it starts with photos and explanations of materials from the point of view of a true artist and teacher. It’s super helpful and often overlooked/neglected part of informational books. Even as a seasoned artists, seeing all the vine, graphite, etc options laid out it was wonderful. Love that they even through in (kneaded erase) tips and all!

The anatomy content is great, more than you’d get in a basic life drawing class but absolute WATER for a thirsty life drawing+anatomy-loving person. Goes into detail that you can either study or completely skim. It felt great to skim through and also say “omg yes I’d love to brush up on the hand bone anatomy+names, let’s go back to that later”, but ALSO super easy to hand the book to my non-trained-artist-partner who can also learn a lot about materials, techniques, anatomy, etc! Truly something for all.
Never though about buying a small skull reference, definitely on my “buy” list now!

The reference drawing images are fine. Not my favorite artwork (wish they included some famous drawing/sketch work for good inspiration) but that’s a personal gripe. Subjective, to each their own.
Biggest gripe/crit would be that I found some of the numerated illustrations confusing to find the corresponding info/word/sentence explainer/etc. I wish they just scattered the text next to the pointed-out area instead of needing to go back and forth. Also, I swear some of the numbers/letters did not correspond with where they were pointing

Ken Goldman, the author and venerated San Diego artist, has created a labor of love in this an incredible compilation of sketches of the musculoskeletal system of the human body. An incredible tool for those artists and even medical students who want to understand the underlying magnificent human structure which give the body form and substance. Highly recommend this gorgeously designed guide.

With anatomy books, you often have to buy three or four to get everything you’re looking for. Not so with this book! The title may say “Essential” Anatomy for Artists, but this is no stripped-down, bargain basement edition. Goldman’s book is beautifully produced and chock full of information. The entire book is in color and printed on heavy stock. It’s organized sensibly and and easy to reference, especially when you’re trying to track down that one odd muscle in the shoulder…

I particularly like the sections on the structure of the head and neck (there’s LOTS of good stuff on the neck), and the (extensive) section on facial expressions. Many drawings, photos and diagrams will help the reader understand how the facial muscles work to generate expressions like fear, disgust and joy.

Much of the work in here is Goldman’s own, but he also includes other artists to broaden the variety of examples for the reader. And examples are not confined to charcoal alone; lots of different media types are shown–pastels, watercolor, paint and ink, too.

The book also includes some excellent photographs of live models–you can use these to do your own anatomical studies.

The actual anatomical diagrams are rendered beautifully, always with an exceptional level of accuracy, but also with an appropriate amount of artistic flair (sometimes these “charts” can looks so stiff and academic). And there is lots of sensible color-coding to help identify groups of muscles and their antagonists. Goldman himself has worked extensively with Natural History Museums and other scientific institutions on creating accurate recreations of birds, animals and environments, and his scientific application shines through in this work.

    Highly recommended!!
