I found this book to be most helpful, I studied art many years ago and having retired returned to portraiture, this has been an excellent book to help me to grasp the basic principles

The style of sketching I want to do is different from this style, wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep it but I think I’m gonna try some of the illistrations and see how I can do with it. There are so many methods/styles of sketching. Really you have to find what works for you.

As long as you have a decent eye this book works great. Heck even if you dont have a decent eye, practice makes perfect right.
Anyways, this book teaches you the basics of portrait drawing. It gets into detail about proportions and details on each part of the face.
It touches a little on things like glasses and hats. And walks you step by step through quite a few portraits in the end of the book.
Get this! Its great!
