It’s a lovely book, it seamlessly introduces character design principles, the lessons are very easy to follow and the subjects are adorably cute.
I’ve noticed I’m returning to it now and then just because I love it.

If you are looking to draw in the kawaii style this book is a must! It’s a really solid book for beginners!

If you’re looking for a cute book on how to draw kawaii characters, then this is the book for you! Inside, you will see Ilaria Ranauro define kawaii for anyone who may not know what it means. You will also find a list of tools along with their personal preferences for each tool. Then we get into the drawing tutorials! One of the things I like about this book is that it’s very encouraging to artists of all levels. Plus, there’s a pretty good section on figuring out proportions and sketching out guidelines for facial features, which even my drawing classes in college didn’t go over.

There’s a lot of tips and tricks before we dive into a series of tutorials on how to draw a series of different characters ranging from human to animals and even objects. I think that this is the perfect book for anyone learning how to draw or looking to get serious about drawing in different styles. I love how encouraging the author is, which makes it feel like they’re happily guiding readers through the drawing process and letting them know that it takes time to find your personal style as well as see improvement in your work. We’re our own worst critics, and this book is like a pat on the shoulder while also working as our own personal hype squad.

The book contains 62 lessons that can be found in two parts: 1) Kawaii essentials (includes Getting Started; Proportions; Drawing Kawaii: Human Characters, Animal Characters, Object Characters; Facial Expressions, and Finding Your Own Style); and 2) Kawaii Characters, Step-by-Step (includes 55 characters divided into Animals, Peoples, Food, and Objects). Her recommendation for the readers are: “As I share in this book, when you decide that you want to learn how to draw, you need to establish a practice that includes three things: observing other artists’ work, creating a routine that lets you draw every day, and allowing yourself the time to make ugly art so you can experiment and improve!” in Introduction). Her hope for the readers is: “I hope this book will ignite your curiosity and teach you about the kawaii style, inspire you to create your own characters, and help you develop a love of drawing (in Introduction).
Ranauro gives a good explanation for Kawaii. She points out the differences between Kawaii style and Manga style and shows as well with a drawing what is not Kawaii style. The book is well written. The teaching is accompanied by tips and by clear designs. I highly recommend the book for beginners as well as for those who look for new ideas for drawing in the Kawaii style.
