A comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of lighting design

Designing With Light: The Art, Science, and Practice of Architectural Lighting Design is a comprehensive introduction to the intelligent use of lighting to define and enhance a space. The book explores all aspects of the process, including aesthetics, technology, and practicalities, in a clear, concise manner designed to provide the reader with a full working knowledge of lighting design. Color illustrations throughout demonstrate the real-world effects of the concepts presented, and the companion website offers video animations and exercises to better illuminate the art and science of lighting. The book addresses the considerations that should be a part of any designer’s process, and provides thorough guidance on meeting the various demands with smarter design.

Lighting is an essential element of interior design, and despite its ubiquity, is difficult to truly master. A designer with a fundamental and conceptual understanding of light is empowered to create simple, typical spaces, or work intelligently with lighting consultants on more complex projects. Designing With Light contains special discussions on color, light, and health, as well as the latest information on energy efficient lighting, control systems, and other technologies. Topics include:

  • Physics, psychology, and perception of light
  • Current and future lighting technology
  • Communication, documentation, and the design process
  • Sustainability, daylighting, and energy efficiency

The book also contains an entire chapter on building and energy codes, as well as practical guidance on photometrics and calculations. Lighting can make or break an otherwise well-designed space, so designers need the background to be able to think intelligently about illumination factors during all stages of the process. With comprehensive coverage and thorough explanation, Designing With Light is a complete resource for students and professionals alike.

I do electrical maintenance which includes a lot of working with lighting circuits. This book has been a huge help on understanding the fundamentals of lighting, types of fixures and bulbs, and an overall view of the industry. Granted, it’s not going to tell you absolutely everything…it does do the job for the size of the book.

Preparing to teach a course in lighting I read through several books recommended within the industry. This was one of the few that started with an explanation of what lighting design is and how to start thinking about designing with electric light. Using this book, I found my students became engaged quickly and it kept their interest.
Each chapter is written purposefully. You get the sense that he wanted you to feel like you were in his classroom. Facts are presented in a conversation format that is easily understood. He breaks down the basic principles with supporting graphics that allow design and non-design people to understand and retain the information. Students found the book gave them a set of tools that could be used in other classes.
He makes a point to include important historical facts, figures and theories that have impacted the development of the profession to provide a foundation and explain how architectural lighting has become what it is today.
I have encouraged my students to keep this book as a reference guide in school and as they begin their careers in design.
It’s time Wiley approached the author to publish a sequel with LED’s being a central focus.

The book is wonderful and just what we were looking for. What is most disappointing is the condition of the book. The middle pages were crinkled up and the back cover is ripped. I love to buy used books but this one was overpriced for it’s extremely poor condition.

Clear and concise coverage of architectural lighting design techniques. Excellent photo illustrations which help to provide context for a variety of applications. The pacing of the book provides knowledge on any particular topic in short chapters, breaking up the information to make each segment digestible in a 20 minute reading by students. I would recommend this book as an intermediate level textbook for lighting design courses, whether for an interior design program or lighting design curriculum.

An excellent book on lighting design. I am outsider to the field, so I can’t really address the accuracy of everything that is said. But in terms of scope it covers all the bases. I found that I tended to “dip” into sections that discussed things I didn’t know much about, and skip others. This book is just as useful ether way. Lighting design is both a science and an art, and I would have appreciated reading more about the intuitive aspects of lighting that arise out of years of experience. I would also have likes to see more case studies. But maybe that is content for others to write about. As a starting foundational core of the topic, this book is excellent.
