I love the book it’s providing me a roadmap with clear path to learn how to get started on planning process involved in painting.
I find it a very motivating book that aims to help you find your own style and things you can do to get and keep your creative ideas moving forward.
I will be purchasing her other book as well.

The content and artwork inside is so unappealing that it looks like art projects for toddlers. Stamp this, paste that, throw some paint in, mix everything up, whatever crap you’re left with in the end is your mixed media art! Ok, thank you for that valuable lesson!

A great book for artists wishing to create bold landscapes. It is written with clear text and explicit instructions. Great!

Simple to understand, practical exercises and good examples. After years of Painting intuitively and being a colourist this book has helped me see where my personal art style really sits. I’m a spontaneous painter, however, keeping a visual diary of ideas, marks/patterns and basic sketches is something I will take from this book along with composition practice sketching.

Lovely book. Paintings are vibrant and alive. Colours are bright and lovely.. There is a detailed look at colours, use of, preferred palette (the reader’s) etc. The work is not photographic, far from it, but is imaginative and beautiful, no detailed petals and leaves, but bold swishes and swirls and daubs resulting in a work of art, literally. Maybe not everybody’s cup of tea, but definitely mine. Oh! and this talented lady also uses collage under her paint and gives lots of advice about doing this. I haven’t had a go yet, I did buy the paint – I chose acrylic, she uses oil and acrylic and the book deals with both in the writing. I’m scared to start in case I destroy my beautiful dream so I will continue to devour the book and enjoy my aspirations for a little while longer! Forgot to mention that her style is reminiscent of Mary Fedden.

I own many art books and this is one of the best as far as inspiration goes. I’m an experienced artist but I needed fresh input to get me started after years of neglecting my painting. I love the artist’s composition and color, as well as her use of mixed media. After merely looking over part of the book I pulled out a painting from 7 years ago and immediately knew what was missing. Of course, it helps that I’m an expressionist myself — not all art or all books are for the same for every person — but I would highly recommend this book.

I had checked this out of the library to preview it before ordering. I love the content and the step by step directions of several of the projects, which is why I decided to buy it. My copy arrived and I was very disappointed to discover that it had been printed on much thinner, matte paper rather than the thicker, glossy paper used in the library copy. The artwork reads flat and isn’t nearly as appealing when printed on the paper in the copy I received. I am considering returning it.

I confess, I don’t usually write reviews. But I’m not even all the way into this book and I’m prompted to write a review. While I’m not new to expressive painting, I’ve learned most of what I know by stumbling and happy accidents. Annie has given me so much of what I wish I knew in a friendly, easy format – and all of the gorgeous color inspiration is a bonus! I had the great fortune to take a workshop with her and it was wonderful! So I have anxiously awaited the release of her book – and it definitely did not disappoint. It is the right blend of art theory with a creative twist. I’m sure I will come back to this book many times. Thanks, Annie – for so graciously sharing your art and knowledge with us.

This is the book I’ve always wanted for mixed media painting. Each chapter is a clear story on an aspect of painting that is well written, short and nicely depicted in colorful photos. I am fairly new at making artwork on canvas or a board, and I like the way there is a stepped out approach I can take when I show up for a painting session.
Additionally, if I am experimenting on one subject , say, creating my own collage papers, lots of fun techniques are pictured to show me what to do. I am good at understanding written instructions, but better when I can see it before I try it out.
There are chapters on color , design, and the usual elements that go into creating art, but they are simplified, leaving an awareness of these elements, but are not so dominant that they cause freezing fear. And, finally, a practical use of my journal! I do NOT have to feel impelled to create works of art in a book that is hidden from view. The journal is used as a place to collect notes, color swatches and the place to plan the painting I am dreaming of and working on. How freeing!
It is very clear to me that this woman has been developing her skills for a long time and she has learned how to stay true to her impulses and inner guidance. Her use of color, shapes, line and subject matter are strokes of love, put into painting action. She will now be my guide on my path to self expression, and I am very grateful for her willingness to share what she has learned with me.
I plan to get her videos to augment this book and will probably have them running in my little bedroom studio for the inspiration of having a beloved teacher watching over my shoulder as I move my brush with my hopeful, expectant hands in training.
Thank you Annie O’brien Gonzales
