Basics Fashion Design 06: Knitwear is a practical introduction to the use of knitwear in fashion design, richly illustrated with examples and easy-to-follow diagrams. It describes the many varieties of yarn and fibre, their characteristics and their behaviour, from the traditional to the contemporary. It explains the relevant machinery and tools, and the types of work that can be produced on each.
Basic techniques on domestic machines are discussed, leading to a section on how to create a knitting pattern. Details and trims are also examined, outlining embellishment, buttonholes and fastenings.
The book also discusses the knitwear industry and offers useful information on the various career pathways. Interviews with international designers, each at a different level within the industry, provide further insight into the business as a whole.

This book is a great book to understand and enter into the market when it comes to knitwear. I bought the whole series and read them from cover to cover. This is not for the advanced student, but the beginner. You should also get more books on knits, especially on how knits are sewn together and made so that you have a thorough understand in this niche market within fashion. Get books from the sewing section of AMAZON and look through a few before you buy one. You do not need one with a ton of detail, but should at least have enough info so that you understand what you are dealing with when it comes to knits and the construction of knit garments.
I also think that fashion designers should have a thorough understanding of color theory, which is really not taught that much or well. It is also a very complex subject to learn and understand.
BUT!!!!!
There is hope!!!
if you want to know about Color theory to get even better….
COLOR WORKS, the crafter Guide to Color by Deb Menz
FOR ANYONE who wants to know about Color Theory this test breaks it down so that ANYONE can understand this subject. I learned more about color theory in this book than all others put together because I now “Understand” the concept.
While this book is for the textile artist, ALL artists should get it and is also has cut outs to use when choosing your colour palette whether it be for Fashion Design or Art.
This book is a MUST HAVE!!!!

I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of this book. It has inspired me to study knitwear design and To upgrade my knitting machine from the Silver Reed LK150 which is really a hobby machine. I have been machine knitting on and off for about 20 years . I sold my fine gauge machine at a yard sale (punchcard) for $125 about 6 years ago – no, that didn’t make much sense. Well the purchase of this book got me interested again and I read a section almost every night. It is well written and I believe a beginner to advanced machine knitters will benefit from the information presented. I really love this book – this is my first review!
