This third title in the highly popular Artist Master Series from 3dtotal Publishing offers a comprehensive guide to using perspective and depth successfully in your art, with direction from world-class artists.

As an established authority on art and design with a growing stable of high-calibre artist–authors, 3dtotal Publishing is uniquely placed to produce Artists’ Master Series. Launched in 2021 with Artists’ Master Series: Color & Light, and followed up by Artists’ Master Series: Composition & Narrative, the series reaches its third volume with an exciting and considered analysis of the theories of perspective and depth within art.

No matter what medium you work in, this combination can be the driving force that elevates art from “good” to “world-class”. This book takes these fundamentals and pushes them to an advanced level of understanding and application. To achieve this ambitious brief, a select few, hugely popular industry experts – Mike Hernandez, Devin Elle Kurtz, Nathan Fowkes, Orenji, and Guweiz – reveal how they plan and execute these techniques.

Their in-depth illustrated advice, detailed step-by-step tutorials, enlightening case studies, and awe-inspiring inspiration provide a distinctive and invaluable blend of professional-grade techniques that can’t be found anywhere else. For artists and designers aiming to raise their game to expert level, the Artists’ Masters Series is the key to success.

I got this for a friend for Christmas and he LOVES IT. Before I sent it I took a sneak peak and I will definitely be buying myself a set. We are both artists and I can’t stress how important it is to have on hand references and guides from books and not just the internet. Over all he said the book helped him see a lot and he has grown to understand what his works need/ needs less of. Perfect for what he’s been struggling with.

The first one in this series was great, and the second one was already sloppy, but here, I checked the preview first; this was a good idea to do. I will wait for the 2nd edition before suggesting this as a Trainer to others.

The first 27 pages have so many shortcomings in allowing the reader to fully use perspective constructions that I needed to write this down. Most Perspective books are on that low level, in all fairness, this here seems to be a quick copy of the technical part.

Let’s hope some editor with more elan can work on the 2nd edition. I love the publisher, but here, it failed miserably.

Besides some advanced degrees, I have an MFA and learned perspective from one of the best teachers. So, I’m not even pretending that it is my knowledge that I lean here against this book as a measurement.

Edit: after some discussions, I got the Kindle version; here is my finding:

Page 76 (kindle version) confuses the beginner even more with a tip that misses any build-up to be understood fully. At the same time, it is placing the idea of more vanishing points into the “weird” category.

Well, when looking at image 11a on page 217, there is hope, as this artist understands it, but sadly doesn’t give it away. Guweiz might be the key to a great 2nd entity. I hope the editor gets Guweiz’s support.
Otherwise, the content is less powerful in demonstrating the target of the book’s title. So, I keep it at two stars. I will keep it to showcase how things can go awry. /edit

An excellent resource for learning how to handle perspectives in artwork and how to apply it along with other techniques to achieves a tangible sense of depth. This is a very good combination of the two the book also explains how to achieve a sense of depth with very different perspective choices, something that can be overlooked in other material.

This is a beautifully illustrated book demonstrating artists’ strategies to create depth in paintings. While it does not focus on the use of perspective grids, as used in architectural and detailed drawing, the illustrations and descriptions demonstrate different ways to create depth. Included are one- two-, three- and four-point perspective, as well as worm’s eye view, and bird’s eye views, along with other strategies such as foreshortening, atmospheric perspective, and use of shadows and other artistic techniques. Also included are a variety of ways to “break the rules” of traditional perspective.

The tutorials sections brings out additional detailed teaching, showing the process of creating a drawing or painting using perspective. Finally, in the gallery, the artists discuss their own works.

I am working through this book. I find it excellent, especially in conjunction with the two perspective volumes by Marcos Mateu-Mestre.
The bok even has a tutorial by arguably the best illustrator in the world at present, Guweiz.

Always good to get some educational inspiration. Never too old to stop learning. I found the negative reviews for this book patently unwarranted, and I’m not sure what they were based upon. I would buy any book in this series without hesitation.
