Drawing is “the very essence of all pictorial art,” and this book approaches the challenging art of animal painting from the point of view of accurate representation of animal subjects on canvas. Combining useful information on important anatomical features with direction on how to handle the subjects and how to express their forms and postures, the author has produced a complete, inexpensive, at-home course in animal painting and anatomy.
All aspects of animal drawing and painting are covered: drawing from life; anatomy in relation to drawing (not surgical anatomy, but a precise knowledge of the visible structure and movements of animals); characteristic movements of animals and suggestions on how to capture them in your picture; composition (design, restraint, rhythm, balance of light and shade, relative scale of animals and landscape, foregrounds); painting and color. 36 illustrations, mostly sketches by the author, depict horses, pigs, cows, dogs, and other animals in various life positions and movements. A long, detailed discussion of the anatomy of animals completes the book. Here Mr. Calderon describes all the structures of animals that are of significance to the artist: the vertebral skeleton, the bones and muscles of the head, the muscles of the vertebral skeleton, the fore-limb and its muscles, the muscles attaching the shoulder blade to the trunk, and the bones and muscles of the hind limb. 208 drawings accompany these discussions and show you how anatomy is related to surface contours and techniques of shading.

Have asked for a replacement book as the one I received was misprinted. The images and labeling were so pale as to be unreadible. Hopefully the replacement will be correct as it is a great book for drawing animal anatomy.

Not the greatest book. It’s very wordy and pictures are very small and minimal.

(By Brenda’s husband who has dabbled with art for over 60 years!)
As far as I can find out this book by William Frank Calderon (1865-1943) was first published in 1936 by Seeley Service. It formed one of around 20 titles in their New Art Library which looked at both theoretical and practical art in some detail as was still taught in the earlier twentieth century for a wide range of artistic genres.
Everything within these volumes was classically taught and if you prefer modern abstract art or revel in ‘self expression’ as the only way forward, then this book is not for you. Within these wonderful pages, everything is to the utmost detail to such an extent that a First Year Vetenary Student would find much of interest in the anatomy section. If he was an amateur artist for relaxation as well, then his satisfaction would be complete! There are 36 plates and the 208 drawings are all supurb. If you want to draw various animals accurately that look real and skillfully done, then this is the book you seek to accomplish your dreams. If after working diligently through this book you still can’t draw properly, then art is possibly not your forte and you should take up car mechanics instead or some form of ‘paint by numbers’. I have the 1950 edition which was still published by Seeley Service and all the illustrations are very clear. Older editions before computers and photocopiers were far better printed than recent ones and still actually cost less. That would assume that you want a working copy and not something with unblemished dust jacket that has lain in a cool, dry, dark room bathed in nitrogen for the past 70 or more years! Such copies still exist but they cost an arm and a leg!
This is a marvellous book and age doth not weary it! In fact, it is its greatest selling point!

This book of drawing studies is a great resource for artist and scientist. Both the images and text. A nice presentation.

My favorite animal anatomy book! This is my go-to book on horse anatomy when I’m working on a drawing. I’m very fussy about correctly drawn animals, and the horses are very well done in this book, much more so than in many other animal anatomy books.

My one complaint is that the book is organized by body parts and not by animals. I solved this by buying another copy (it’s cheap enough) and cutting up my somewhat dog-eared original copy and reorganizing all the pages by animal. I have the intact copy for reading and the cut up pages to work from for whatever animal I’m drawing. Problem solved.

One of the best books written for the artist who loves to draw animals. The authors writing style is easy to read for the contemporary artist and his advice on composition, perspective, etc. are sound. His suggestions on how to draw a living moving animal are the result of years of experience. The book has delightful gestural sketches by the author as well as a number of b&w photos of paintings; both thoughtfully chosen to illustrate his ideas.

Ok, but the images are super pale. A very dense read, not my favorite animal anatomy book.
