Its the classic in its fielda reference work of unparalleled importance for all professionals and students of art. This superb art manual is the best guide available on a subject that has fascinated artists for centuries: the human body. Jenö Barcsay, a professor who taught applied anatomy at the Budapest Academy of Fine Arts, offers a detailed portrayal of the body for the fine artist in 142 full-page plates. From the entire skeleton and the joints in and out of motion to all the muscles and even facial characteristics, every body part appears in close-up and from varying perspectives. Accompanying the images are brief discussions of male and female anatomical construction, explaining precisely the articulations and movement of the foot, the arm, the trunk, the spinal column, and the skull. In many cases, two sketches appear side by side: one just lightly traced in, and marked with letters to show how proportions and perspective were figured, and another fully finished drawing. Without the indispensable information contained on these illuminating pages, painters cannot observe with understanding all the attitudes, positions, and movements of which the body is capableand produce a truly magnificent work of art.Features a new concealed spiral that keeps the book open as you work!

I was going to give the book 3 stars BUT I blame myself for my dissatisfaction. The book itself is quite nice and I have no complaints at all with the text or illustrations per say. It’s just the book is smaller than I anticipated..I should have checked the dimensions of the book (which is 8.5 x 7.1 x 1.2 inches). I also feel that is some cases, there are too many pictures on one page (leading to more “size issues”).
I wanted a book from which I could draw copies of the anatomical illustrations. This book doesn’t work for me in that manner.
Having said all that, the info and the pictures are lovely. I just wish it were a larger book with larger pictures (7.5 by 11 would be perfect but this is just my opinion).

I purchased this book as a replacement for the same I bought in 1967. This book is even better than my original!

Best book to start out with anatomy and illustration. If you have someone interested in Life Drawing get this book. A little routine I learned was to trace the bones and than draw the muscles over the bones you traced from the book. It is the Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy Dog of typing. You will be already for your Life Drawing class after performing this routine.

ce livre m avait été recommandé par mon professeur de dessin. il était annoncé comme d’occasion, mais à simple vue il est tout neuf! il est très bien conçu mais comme tous ces manuels, un peu volumineux.

If you’re looking for a book with a lot of references ( anatomy plates ) for drawing, painting, that’s sth for you

Outstanding, and no wonder it’s been in print for a half century. It can be bought new, but I purchased a copy from a printing back in the 1950s. It was in immaculate condition, but the volume is large enough (10×13 and over 300 pages), that it is a bit fragile. Just something to take into consideration if you’re trying to decide between old and new. I like the older version, and I’m careful going through it, but it would not be a good choice for a shared copy liable to get hard use.

I think every artist who draw or paint human must have this book. It is a comprehensive work of the teacher in human anatomy for artists
