The Museum’s collection illuminates all aspects of Sargent’s career. The drawings and watercolors in particular reflect his activity outside the portrait studio: his sojourns in Spain, Morocco and elsewhere in North Africa, and in the Middle East; his enduring fascination with Venice; his holidays in the Italian lake district and the Alps; his tours of North America, including Florida and the Rocky Mountains; his visit as an official war artist to the western front in 1918; and his work as a muralist at the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Harvard University’s Widener Library.

most of the book showed his student days. sargent worked really hard to get where he got but his student drawings were good to not great. i had a personal goal to copy his work to aid my own ablity to paint and this book had very few images i would want for that exercise . as a study of sargent’s development it is a great book of his early works.

A very scholarly and thorough account of all of Sargent’s drawings and watercolors in the Metropolitan Museum’s collection. There is a reproduction of each work with information on each ranging from a brief description to a complete account of the history of the work, it’s relation to other works, an analysis of artistic intent and aesthetic value, technique, materials, and etc. This book will please Sargent fans – even the hard-to-please artist.

An excellent, comprehensive, and rare collections of Sargent’s drawings and watercolors. Good emphasis is given to his sketchbooks (including early sketchbooks, with sketches dating from when Sargent was barely 14 years old), and as such it gives one a rare glimpse into the early stages of the formation of the artist. I am surprised there are not more reviews of this book — highly recommended.

Great book for background into Sargent’s wonderful drawing skills and site locations he used. Much insight of his composition skills too!
