Advanced Fashion Drawing is a practical book showing not only how to draw the figure but also how to illustrate it in today’s fashion and lifestyle market.
Designed specifically for those interested in illustrating fashion and lifestyle commercially, Bil Donovan demonstrates how to create an illustration with a sense of fashion, rather than one that concentrates solely on the fashion figure.
A series of demonstrations and exercises help the advanced illustration student hone their skills and increase their level of draughtsmanship, while establishing their own personal style.

Ein tolles Buch. Alles sehr gut erklärt und mit Beispielen veranschaulicht. Es macht richtig Spaß sich durch die Anleitungen zu lesen. Das Buch ist wirklich für Advanced Zeichner gut geeignet.

A really useful step-by-step manual which guides you starting from the beginning and gives you technique! It’s like the master is sharing his secrets and makes you develop your own inconfundible syle!

This book is honest: it’s advanced. And I wasn’t disappointed. If you already have drawing skills you’ll be able to go one step ahead.
The graphic design of the book is perfect and the author presents the techniques analizing good examples from many authors. Each chapter has its introduction and the directions to exercise and learn some rules. At the end of the book you are challenged to break the rules and to find you’re own signature. Very good book!

Some drawings with colors for my satisfaction, otherwise not what I wanted. When you buy books online you do not have a choice to look through the book therefore I have bought books not to my satisfaction

So far this is the best book on fashion illustration I have purchased and I have a lot of books. It helps to have a bit of drawing experience first but even if you don’t, it’s great. Highly recommend it.

I am an amateur fashion artist. I have no desire to do design – I have for whatever reason gravitated to liking to draw fashion (my wife probably would say it’s because it’s permission to draw women all day :)).
And I really love Donovan’s work plus his instruction is very good. It goes beyond the traditional – draw 8 heads and measure – instead use the “balance method”. And he shows you how to expand into even more impressionistic styles.

There is much to learn in this book by Bil Donovan. He is a tremendous talent. I’ve been a fan of his illustrations for years.
His book is packed with images at the edge – illustrations like Rachel Ann Linday’s fantastical “continuous line drawing” are not to be missed.
And the exercises and multimedia techniques will appeal to artists, illustrators as well as fashion designers. One of my favorites is the chapter on media, where we see the same image repeated on various papers, using different mediums including digital.
My only quibble, and it is minor, is despite an abundance of brilliant, fresh imagery, I also found safe, old-school figures. The cover, as example. At first glance it’s another ho-hum stereotypical runway mannequin. Look a tad closer and marvel at the technique in line and body.
I was hoping for an even larger ratio of high-risk, underground imagery – the kind found in Laird Borrelli’s “Fashion Illustration Next”.
Nonetheless, there is plenty of greatness in “Advanced Fashion Drawing.” The book is an achievement and a classic. It should be a staple for aspiring illustrators for many years to come.
