This is an absolute classic now and even though it’s old, it never ages (if you know what I mean?) It’s an excellent insight into the old classic horror films made by Universal, Hammer, Toho etc and is an essential part of any horror fan’s collection. My brother had this when we were growing up and as a kid I was fascinated by the pics. Even today I think the old black and white horror movies have more atmosphere and scare value than any new, CGI movie of today.

From the late nineteenth century black and white slide shows of French film maker and sometimes actor Georges Méliès to the Technicolor drive in pictures of the early 1970’s, “A Pictorial History Of Horror Movies” is jammed packed with amazing photos of some of the world’s most famous and best beloved horror flicks along with rare “lost” silent films and more obscure ones. Denis Gifford presents a pictorial cornucopia of famous horror movie posters, stills of classic actors like Karloff, Lugosi and Chaneys Sr. and Jr in their trademark roles and several of the well known creatures of the atomic age.
But this is more than just another coffee table book of black and white and colored horror movie photos. Gifford’s tongue in cheek text tells a fascinating story of the development of the horror film from its primitive beginnings through 7 decades of silents, screams, silver bullets, radioactive horrors and bloody living color.

I’ve been searching thirty years to replace my original copy and am very pleased to have finally found “A Pictorial History Of Horror Movies” at such a reasonable price.

How wonderful it is that we are able to look up some of these classic books here on Amazon and purchase them at affordable prices? I remember seeing this in a used bookstore when I was a child in the early 80s and while my mother was browsing in the true crime section, I, the young horror fan, was busy flipping the pages of this book, just taking it all in. By then, I was already a horror movie fan, having watched “Dracula” (with Christopher Lee), the films of Peter Cushing, and more. Imagine my delight to see them in this book, but alas, money was scarce back then, and I could not afford the book, even at a used book price.

Fast forward several decades, and all I remembered was the cover of this book and lo and behold, as I was browsing Amazon last week I saw this cover pop up on my page, and here we are. The book is every bit as delightful as I remember it, featuring B&W film stills aplenty and some color ones, including a particularly memorable full page color still of Ingrid Pitt about to claim a victim in the film “The Vampire Lovers” (RIP Ms. Pitt). The film stills alone are worth the purchase price, and boy what memories they resurrected. Recommended for the ardent classic horror buff.

Everything you need to know about earlier Horror. The oldies but the best. Great for curling up in bed with for a cosy evening in October.
Wonderful photography, fully explained provides some food for thought.

This old but very valuable work on classic horror movies will delight any fan of the genre. Plenty of film history, lots of clips, and some humor make this a fun read. Slightly weighted toward British films, this book nevertheless provides plenty of information for those interested in American and Continental horror movies.
