If you are looking for inspiration in designing the look of your robots, this book is hard to beat. I was looking for a book to help me with 3d game character design but I would have been equally impressed if I’d been drawing cartoons or making movie CGI.
The book deals predominently with humanform robots, although others do feature including walking battlebots and the odd alien or animal hybrid. The style of the art is mostly futuristic (understandly) but there are a few steampunk and organic designs. Military and Space Sci-Fi designs are particularly well covered.
The ’50 robots’ of the title are covered in high detail with each individual robot design explored across 2 pages. Line drawings, basic 3d construction guides and colour art show you everything you need to know about that design. At least 80% of the designs are of the quality one would expect of a commercial game, comic or movie. The rest were perhaps just not to my personal taste.
Other content covers construction elements such as cabling, hydraulic tubes, articulation, joints, surface materials etc. All the bits that are useful to know to for interesting extra detail.
To Sum Up: Whether you are looking for inspiration or wanting to add finesse to your designs, this book is probably exactly what you are looking for.

This book is great if you are looking for inspiration on designing and drawing robots. It has some tips on drawing techniques and how to block robots out. There is also a useful part about robot mechanics and anatomy.
But the main part of the book is filled with examples of robots, of varying types and styles. Each robot has a backstory and theme, the finished illustration, a simplified geometric break-down and intermediary drawing steps.
This book will not teach you how to draw per se, but it’s a good source of inspiration and can help you learn on your own.
