201 Crochet Motifs contains over 150 original crochet blocks and motifs plus 51 gorgeous projects to inspire your creativity.
Packed with ideas to get you going, this clever directory is split into three main chapters entitled Motifs, The Projects, and The Techniques. The first chapter, Motifs, is divided into five sections that cover everything from the simplest crosses and spirals to geometric shapes, pictures, lacy patterns, and bold, beautiful flowers. Use them to make up your own bags, throws, scarves, and pillows, designed just as you choose, or follow one of Melody’s foolproof patterns in The Projects. With over 50 projects to choose from there’ll be something for everyone to make, whether that is a butterfly brooch, holly greetings cards, an openwork afghan, cat pillow, button baby blanket, tie belt, cherry border cardigan or something entirely different. Each motif is displayed as a color photograph next to easy-to-follow instructions, with stitch diagrams for more complex motifs. Melody also advises on the type of yarn to use, the tension and the size of the motif, and gives tips on how to achieve the best result. There is also advice for designing your own makes, so you can treat the motifs as a jumping-off point. Finally, The Techniques offers further explanation and guidance so that no stitch is beyond your ability.

With sketches and photos showing how the motif can be used, either on its own, with several together, or partnered with other motifs, 201 Crochet Motifs will show you that the crocheting possibilities are endless.

I only found this book using the ISBN code: 9781908862877, as there does seem to be other versions of this but using US terminology and not UK.
It is an excellent book for introducing the less experienced crocheter into the realms of completing projects and stepping away from granny squares. The instructions are well written and the photography gives you a very clear idea of the end result. The book also includes charts and templates for other projects. Definitely recommended for your Crochet Library.

Disappointed that I can’t read this on kindle and there’s no way to zoom in for this book (unlike another crochet book I have on kindle) I can see that the pages have just been photocopied and uploaded rather than reformatted.

UK, May 2010. The book advertised here, published by CICO, has US terminology. There is absolutely no mention of that anywhere on this site. So much for online bookbuying.
There’s another version with the same cover, published by Ryland and Peters UK, which I assume has the UK terminology. It has the following ISBN numbers.
    # ISBN-10: 1904991653
    # ISBN-13: 978-1904991656
Unfortunately at the time of writing it was only available 2nd hand and at a bigger price.
It’s quite a well designed crochet book, of which about three fifths will be useful to the experienced crocheter. That’s quite a good average really. It’s a bit simple, but many designs were new to me and could be adapted.

The cover on the American version is much different — and better — than the one shown here. This book is bursting with great stuff, and even includes some wonderful patterns for a cute adult flower granny jacket,
adorable baby booties, fashion tops, pillows, afghans and my favorite — a mini bag with a crocheted Siamese cat motif.

The book is worth its price for just one thing alone: a well-done set of crocheted letters, forming an
alphabet. Each letter is individual to use as you please. But it’s also full of wonderful flowers, motifs of
    all shapes and sizes.

There are delightful touches, such as a leaf with a ladybug, a Scottie Dog block, a fish block, a darling sheep, plus many more blocks of all types and shapes, ranging from the easy to the intricate. A paisley motif
(much better than the one shown on this cover) is a great find. From hearts to trees, if it can be crocheted,
    you’ll find it here.

Photography is good and shows all stitch detail. Symbol charts as well as written instructions are provided for most of the designs.

A useful and really fun book, it would make a great gift for a crocheter.

This is a really lovely and inspiring crochet book. It has beautiful pictures using lovely colours. Each of the motifs and blocks is presented in full colour with full written instructions and charts. The projects pages at the back of the book take the motifs and blocks presented and use them in practical and imaginative ways. Even if they are not to your taste, it shows how our own projects could be put together. The shapes given can be used for lovely scarves, blankets, coasters, bags and even clothes. Many of them are very lovely indeed. There is a good range and sure to be something to suit. The blocks show a technique rarely shown well – jacquard or ‘picture’ crochet ( a bit like intarsia in knitting). There are some lovely little animal blocks that are constructed quite simply, it must be noted however, that details are embroidered. Using the information gleaned by making these squares it would be possible to design your own – with flowers rather than animals perhaps? At the front of the book there are both flowers to make and also blocks using floral design or motifs. There are numerous ways everything in this book can be used and where it particularly exels is to provide the starting point for a unique item developed by you. It is actually my favourite crochet book – it sets your mind buzzing with ideas while looking through it, which is a big plus as far as I am concerned. The only down side to this book and really I think it is quite a big thing, is the lack of finishing information – how to join your motives, either as you go, or sewing or crocheting them together afterwards. It really skims over this information and as it is lacking from so many crochet books that might be a bit of a problem; searching on-line will help you find some of the answers. Nevermind though as I still adore this book!

I bought this book on the strenghth of the other reviews. I think this book is great, lots of lovely flower motifs, spirals, a full alphabet, triangles, and lots more. There is also a projects section at the back which gives you some ideas to use your motifs. There are really clear instructions with a picture chart too if you find that easier to follow.
Most of all I bought it because all my crochet books on motifs, are from the 1970’s and it is great to have a brand spanking, thoroughly modern new crochet book!!

I bought this recently from Amazon. Although it doesn’t state in words, it is in English terminology. You just need to check the stitch symbols chart – if it shows + with dc beside it, you know it is English – (in an American-terminology book, this would show as: + sc )

The ISBN of the book I have is: 978-1-904991-64-9 and published by CICO BOOKS, London, New York

I though there were fewer patterns on offer than in other books of similar price, but the plus is that the instructions are really clear, which is very helpful to novice crocheters! Also, there were unusual patterns, such as the alphabet and the intertwined circles (which I will leave until I am more experienced).

As with all pattern books, this would be so much more user-friendly if it was ringbound!

Book arrived quickly and in excellent condition. There is a really good selection of patterns and some good ideas about what you can make from the motifs. A really good book for beginners and experts alike.
